Case Study: Barking At Cats And Birds
Most dogs bark at any cat or bird that comes into the garden, but what if you dog never stops barking at them and just can’t leave them alone?
Our Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Henry was a nightmare for barking at pigeons in the back garden.
Wasn’t bothered with any other bird, didn’t bark when we were in the front garden or out and he saw a bird, didn’t even chase a bird – but as soon as that pigeon flew anywhere near the back garden that was it.
All hell broke loose till the bird left.
The pigeons (there were two in particular) were quite dim and never learnt that a Staffy barking at them meant they had to leave. Sigh!
Eventually, we managed to get the barking down to a minimum using the distraction techniques on this course. It took quite a while though, repeating every technique over and over for weeks on end.
There were several times when we had to take a step back as Henry would just ignore everything we were trying.
Henry was the most stubborn dog I’ve ever met in my entire life.
Towards the end, he just had more of a huffy-grumble-yap at the birds and cats. Honestly, I wanted complete silence from him, but I had to be grateful we got to the point we did and I was happy with that compared to the constant barking of before!
