RECKONING

She lifted her withered arm
And motioned me to draw closer.
I leaned over the bed and placed
My ear close to her mouth,
Filtered the words from her frightened gasps.

“What did it all mean,” she asked.
She died with only me there,
A lonely death to complete
A life of meaning bare.
