Liu Cixin (simplified Chinese: 刘慈欣; traditional Chinese: 劉慈欣, IPA: [li̯ǒu̯ tsʰɨ̌ɕín]) is a Chinese science fiction writer. He is a nine-time winner of the Galaxy Award (China's most prestigious literary science fiction award) and winner of the Hugo Award. Liu's work is considered hard science fiction. In English translations of his works, his name is given in the form Cixin Liu.
Cixin Liu was born on 23 June 1963 in Yangquan, Shanxi. Liu's parents worked in a mine in Shanxi. Due to the violence of the Cultural Revolution he was sent to live in his ancestral home in Luoshan County, Henan.[3] Liu received technical training from North China University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, graduating in 1988. He has worked as a computer engineer for a power plant located in Yangquan, Shanxi.

Ken Liu (http://kenliu.name) is an author and translator of speculative fiction, as well as a lawyer and programmer. A winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy awards, he has been published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Asimov’s, Analog, Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, and Strange Horizons, among other places.
Ken’s debut novel is THE GRACE OF KINGS (2015), the first in a silkpunk epic fantasy series. He also released a collection of short fiction, THE PAPER MENAGERIE AND OTHER STORIES (2016). He lives with his family near Boston, Massachusetts.
In addition to his original fiction, Ken is also the translator of numerous literary and genre works from Chinese to English. His translation of THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM, by Liu Cixin, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015, the first translated novel to ever receive that honor.

My policy on book reviews I write on Goodreads: I will generally not give ratings to books that could be considered to be in the same genres as mine -- the conflict of interest (or the perception thereof) is simply too strong.
Occasionally I will make an exception and rate a book that is already a major success (e.g., CLOUD ATLAS) such that my rating cannot possibly have any influence on its reception.
I will, however, promote by word and deed books I love by authors I love, regardless of their genre, because I don't believe the literary market is a zero-sum game.
