5. Understand the true power of channeled water.
Employees need to be channeled but they also need to run freely once in that channel. Water is at its most forceful when directed and unobstructed. Give them clear direction and clear goals, and offer assistance if they need it—then get out of the way. Employees are the face of your company to suppliers, customers, and each other. They are watching your products and company every day. How they are treated and guided will determine how much your company will shine.
Task: You’ve been down the road with employees in the past. Maybe you controlled them too much or maybe you ignored them. Now is the time to implement a balanced approach. You are the leader; you’re not their pal or buddy—they need and expect clear direction from you. The best employees expect you to get out of their way. Establish the goals for each employee, then step back. Check in weekly, offer help, then back away.
