Lessons for Rebirth

7. Find the right soil.

Too often we neglect the energy that can and should be created by our actual workspace. All offices, factories, and stores are not created equal. When starting a business, cash needs will determine where we will be located. Often it is just where we can afford. However, as we grow, more thought should be given to creating environments where employees and ideas can flourish.

The work environment will vary depending on the product or service that you offer. Each company must understand what matters most in each department and then design that area accordingly. Creative areas like engineering and marketing need loose and free-thinking bullpens. Finance and legal need more structure. Customer Service should be in a quiet area and completely focused on the customers’ needs.

Task: Study the work environment. Ask employees what would help them be more productive and comfortable. Study other environments. Look for ways to make changes to keep making employees and customers happier. It’s business; love is money.
