The world is full of teamwork, but teamwork is a high risk activity. It often results in low productivity, inconsistent, even disengagement and conflict. Consultants and academics would have us believe teamwork takes leadership, emotional intelligence and other hard to define, hard to learn soft skills. This is only partly true. Project management is likewise challenging. Standards like the PMBOK focus on hard skills, like PERT, Critical Path and Monte Carlo Simulation. But these often necessary hard skills are simply not sufficient. The Third Skillset is a different approach. It looks at the skills that lie between hard and soft skills. Accessible, consistent and easily applied, these skills are a toolkit for more effective teamwork that anyone can apply.
