Glossary

Terms and their meanings

Affiliate Program – This is an Internet based advertising method retailers use. They pay others to put a small advertisement on their webpage so that interested people can click over to their website to buy a product. People who participate by hosting an affiliate advertisement get paid either every time someone clicks on the ad or every time someone buys the product.

Aggregator – This is a program that collects files to which you have subscribed.

 

Blog – Short for “web log” it means a person’s web journal and a place to stand on their virtual soapbox and tell the world their views.

 

Browser – This is the program you use to view the Internet. For example, Microsoft Explorer is one of the more popular versions available.

 

Digital Audio Player – a portable device used to store and play audio files, like MP3 formatted files. Sometimes it is shortened to DAP.

Embedded Advertising – This type of advertising, increasingly popular in television, is to integrate products into the program in a way that showcases the product. Product placement is one of the types of embedded advertising. This is one way to integrate advertising into a podcast as well.

Forum – This is a place on the Internet where you can post messages and read messages posted by others. It’s like a community bulletin board with people leaving ideas, thoughts, suggestions, and responses.

Icon – This is the small picture on your computer that you can click to open the file or the program.

 

iPod – A digital audio player made by Apple, from which podcasting got its name. However, you do not have to own an iPod to listen to podcasts or to be a podcaster yourself.

 

MP3 Player – This is another term for digital audio player. It’s a misnomer because MP3 players often play other types of files as well.

 

Palmcast – This is similar to a podcast, only it is accessed from a handheld device (called a PDA) like a Palm device.

 

Podcast – Inspired from the words “iPod” and broadcast, it means creating audio files in an MP3 format and attaching them to an RSS feed for subscribers to download and listen to.

Portable Audio Device – another term for digital audio device. Sometimes referred to as a PAD. Portable audio device is a little more of a generalized term and may not include devices with MP3 capabilities.

Punchcast – This is similar to a podcast, only it is accessed from a smartphone and does not have to be synchronized from your computer. Your smartphone needs to have RSS capability and the punchcast will be “punched” to your smartphone.

RSS – Really Simply Syndication. It allows subscribers to get files from you.

Smartphone – A cellular phone with extended capabilities, including RSS. These phones typically are the more recent models that can surf the Internet or have text messaging type features.

Synchronize – This is when you hook up your digital audio device to the computer and whatever you’ve downloaded to your computer is moved to your DAP.

 

URL – This is the address that gets typed into your browser when you want to view a website. Many start with http://www... Each podcast has its own URL.

USB – This stands for “Universal Serial Bus” and it is a type of connector that is found in most recent computer systems that allows you to hook up other devices, such as a microphone. Not to be confused with the more traditional style of connector, which is a small, round hole.

Vidcasting -- Very similar in concept to podcasting, except it also includes video! Another name for it is “zencasting.”

Windows Media Player – A standard program that comes with your personal computer. Often, it is your computer’s default media player. You can find it by accessing Start Menu > All programs. It should be in that list.
