Is Fear Holding You Back?

Like a Chinese finger trap, when you pull away from your fear of being trapped, it does no good. You must push toward your fear to be released.

“Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”

— Henry Ford

“The greatest mistake you can make in life is continually fearing that you will make one.”

— Elbert Hubbard

“The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire — not on things we fear.”

— Brian Tracy

“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”

— Walt Disney

When most people think about success, their brain releases chemicals, which triggers fear in the amygdala. The amygdala is an emotion processor and processes fear in the brain. With the process of achieving success comes the possibility of failure. This is why, when you think about going after a goal and achieving success, your brain knows that you could fail. Our brain is wired to constantly tell us to avoid fear, avoid failure, and avoid pain. We need to rewire our brains to tell us to create success, create happiness, create freedom. You must switch and rewire your brain’s conscious and subconscious focus. Otherwise, without you even knowing, your brain is actually making you afraid of success. Luckily, we have control over our brain, so changing it is not difficult. It just takes practice in continual rewiring. We can practice this continual rewiring by building confidence in ourselves. We must believe we are capable of bigger and better things. We must realize that with success comes failure, and we must learn to embrace failure as a constructive learning tool but never to accept it as a final destination. Failure does not mean you’re doing something wrong. It may simply be that you’re doing something right, just in the wrong place. A fly that continues to crash into a window does not need greater effort to get where it is trying to go. It simply needs redirecting. So, when you’re failing at achieving something, think about the fly. Perhaps your failure is not due to your current methods, but your current methods need to be aimed in a new direction. Sometimes our failure is not due to our physical acts but more to our mental focus toward how we allow ourselves to physically act.

“Nothing is too small. I counsel you, put down in record even your doubts and surmises. Hereafter it may be of interest to you to see how true you guess. We learn from failure, not from success!”

— Bram Stoker

Failure is why most people give up so quickly. Yet the most successful people are the ones who failed many times. Even Michael Jordan attributed his legendary skills and success to all his failures. Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Thomas Edison invented some of the most important and well-known products in the world. But he failed many times before he did so. You can’t be afraid of success. Stick to whatever it is you want to accomplish, and one day you will. But you must NEVER give up.

“Your biggest goals and dreams must become more powerful and real in your mind than your biggest doubts, fears, and uncertainties.”

— John Assaraf

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”

— Marianne Williamson
