Rewarding Yourself and Others

It is essential that you reward yourself and others for doing well.

So many people don’t reward themselves, and some reward themselves too much. You need to find a happy medium. You should reward yourself for short-term and long-term achievements. If you’ve been good at staying on task with going to the gym and eating healthy, then it’s okay to reward yourself with a fattening treat or unhealthy snack here and there. When you’ve been working productively for a while, take a little break. It’s good to walk around and stretch in between long periods of sitting. Go get a smoothie or something.

Besides external rewards, it’s important to reward yourself internally. You should feel good about yourself when you accomplish something. You should be happy that you are on track — or getting on track — with creating the dream life you want. Allowing yourself to feel good about yourself is one of the best rewards out there. If you’ve had a long week or month, take a little mini-vacation. You don’t have to leave town and spend a bunch of money. Just simply turn your phone off if you don’t want to be bothered. Take a full day or two and just relax. Involve a loved one if you care to. Clear your mind of work and everything else. Just focus on what makes you happy for those days. You will begin to enjoy life and work much more as you begin to reward yourself externally and internally.

Rewarding others feels as good as — and sometimes better than — rewarding yourself. When someone does something well, even if it’s a stranger, tell them they did a good job. Winning first place feels so good because you know you did a good job — the best job. It’s nice to know you’re doing a good job. So make sure to tell people they’re doing a good job. If you’re at a restaurant, and your waiter or waitress is a great server, tell them. If your employee or coworker is doing a good job, tell them. If someone you care about — a spouse, family member, close friend, whoever — has accomplished something that’s important to them or something that’s a big deal, be sure to reward them. Take them out to celebrate, or buy them a gift and let them know they did a good job and that they should be proud of themselves. By making others feel good, you yourself will feel good.

You will be surprised how much of a positive effect this will have on most people. Rewarding people and giving positive encouragement, whether verbally or with a tangible reward, is very important. People may forget what you said or what you gave them, but they will always remember how you made them feel. So focus on making others feel great.
