The Orphan Girl of Silver Spoon

Nkiru is a fine pretty girl, her parents were happy when she was born, because for 10 years they’ve waited for a baby.

The parents of Nkiru were God fearing and gave her a Christian home training, and also a quality education. But there was a problem, Nkiru had Asthma and an Un-known deadly disease, her parents tried preventing it, she was always with her inhaler and constantly took her pills to prevent a sudden death, and her parents were solemnly by her side.

At seventeen Nkiru graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering 1st Class, and since her family has already built an empire and they’ve come of age they mentored her for 6 months and made her The Managing Director (MD).

So one day during Christmas Nkiru’s parents promised her a trip to New York, USA for the festive period, she was excited. But they travelled to Lagos Nigeria first to make preparations for their international flight, so they told their daughter that they would be back in 3 days’ time.

Mr Ezenna and His wife Uremma, Nkiru’s parents died in a domestic flight from Port Harcourt to Lagos Nigeria. When Nkiru heard the news of her parents death in a crash, it pained her that she can’t even see their corpse to pay her last respect, since all passengers on board were burnt beyond recognition on ashes all over. Immediately she started crying, her extended family, friends, staff and church members came to console her.

Her Pastor told her to be strong; That God is a father to the fatherless and mother to the motherless. 3 weeks later her parents were buried, her uncles and family members wanted to claim what is rightfully hers since she was a girl child. But she told them that “She’s too big a fish to be cut with a razor.” Meaning that she’s not willing to agree to their selfish and evil plan, she called her lawyer and her Dad’s will was read before everyone that all his empire has been willed to his only daughter Nkiru Ezenna. Her wicked Uncles all left in shame.

5 Years later, Nkiru was 22 years old and had just finished celebrating her birthday, and her business empire had grown rapidly, Nkiru was generous, always helping the orphans, poor, needy, staffs and everyone around her. She sends relieve materials like; Food stuffs, Toiletries, and books to motherless Baby homes and orphanages monthly. Everyone in her city was grateful to her because of her good habits and humility. At age 22 she already had her PhD in Marine Engineering.

One day Nkiru was at the hospital after a brief illness, after series of tests, the Doctor opened up to her that she had stage 4 Cancer, that she has just 2 weeks to live. She started crying, the doctor consoled her and told her not to cry but to start preparing for her funeral, but after leaving the office she forgot her faith in God and never prayed, instead she went home locked herself in her room and wept for 2 days, on the 3rd day she called all her staff and paid them huge amounts each, and set a standard should in case she’s no more the next in line among the board members will take over the mantle of leadership, but she never disclosed her health challenges and her limited time to live.

The next day she called her driver ken to take her to the airport that she would be travelling to Australia to spend some time there.

After her driver left, she took a taxi to an unknown remote community. On reaching the village, she brought out the Ghana must go bag she bought, inside were some simple wears, and she disguised herself.

Walking in the streets of the village she saw a notice on a local restaurant with the caption “Sales girl wanted” she went in and applied and luckily she was accepted and she began her duties immediately. Knowing that she had but a week and 2 days to live, she never wanted to die in luxury.

Mr and Mrs Kunle, the owners of the business loved Nkiru’s industrious nature, how she handled the dishes, cleaned the chairs and attitude to customers. But they told her that her salary will be #1,000 monthly, since it’s still a growing business. She agreed, at 10pm when they closed, Nkiru had nowhere to go, so she pleaded to Mr & Mrs Kunle that she was an orphan, that she wouldn’t mind doing house chores just for shelter, Mr & Mrs Kunle felt sympathy when they saw the tears in her eyes, and agreed to help her.

They took her home to their little hut, Okpeyemi and Eyawomi (A Boy & a Girl) were their kids, and they were both in secondary school. Everybody loved Nkiru, because she is humble and hardworking, she works at the restaurant, fetches fire wood with Eyaomi, cooks, ran errands and was loyal to everyone in her neighbourhood and she sings very well in their local church.

On the day Nkiru’s Doctor has told her that she would die, she fell down while sweeping the shop and she was at the verge of dying. Mr Kunle said to his wife

“If that we knew we wouldn’t have employed a sick girl to work for us but all the same we will help her.”

After some herbal consultations and medications, she recovered, thanked the family. The next day she sneaked to a nearby town, went to a hospital and ran series of test, the test results showed that she was no more asthmatics and no more symptom of any disease whatsoever.

Knowing she was totally free, Nkiru came back and thanked Mr & Mrs Kunle for saving her life, a month later she told them that she wants to go, they asked why & where? She said never mind, but I’m going to the city for a greener pasture, I will be back.

Nkiru got back to the city, met her doctor, who ran another test on her and confirmed that this must be a miracle, it’s beyond his intellectuals. She told him how she was saved, went to her company and was well welcomed, and operations were going on smoothly, she got home, her domestic staff were happy to see her, she called her driver, gave him #500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) to give to Mr & Mrs Kunle That owns a restaurant in Omagwa community.

That he should convince him that the money is a grant from Angel Investors to growing business, to foster rapid economic growth and development. Which the driver did perfectly and Mr & Mrs Kunle were very happy and expanded their business and built a new apartment.

5 Months later, Mr & Mrs Kunle heard the villagers yelling “come and see oh,” they came out of their shop and saw a convoy and construction workers too, because prior to Nkiru’s arrival, on her orders, her company had started building roads in that community, schools, electricity and pipe borne waters. And the community thought it was the government that has remembered them.

Nkiru greeted the people of Omagwa Community and when she saw Okpeyemi and Eyawomi coming to embrace her she was very happy, and she turned and saw Mr & Mrs Kunle coming towards her direction she ran and hugged them. They went inside their shop and she told them her story and how she is eternally grateful to them for saving her life. That same day, She took Mr & Mrs Kunle and Family to the City, Showed them her empire, told them that they are now her adopted parents, gave them good jobs in her company, and opened a bigger version of their restaurant there in the city with well-equipped and competent staff, theirs is just to supervise.

Okpeyemi and Eyawomi wrote their WAEC (West African Examination Council) in the city and got admissions into the university; their parents attended adult education and also joined the university year later. Nkiru got married, moved to her husband’s home and they lived happy ever after.

The Great Disguise

In the land of Igbudu, there lived a king named Eze Omeri-Ora1 1 of Igbudu Kingdom, he had a wife and a son, Queen Agnes and Prince Uchenna.

Years Later, Prince Uchenna wanted to get married, his Dad wanted to choose a wife for him, but he refused and told his dad that he would do it himself. On the fourth night he disguised himself, because previously he had been played and cheated upon by girls who were after his money and status and not love, so he embarked on a journey to an un-known village, where he built a yam barn, and a hut and started farming, and was simply known as Uchenna in that community.

One afternoon Uchenna saw a beautiful young maiden. Hello, he called, she heard and never answered, because she was on her way to the stream and it’s running late.

Uchenna followed her to the stream, and when she was done getting the water into her pot, he offered to help, and she said “No thanks” and helped herself.

I’m Uchenna, what’s your name? I’m Ulemma.

I would like to be your friend, he said.

But you don’t even know me? She replied.

That doesn’t matter, with time I will, replied Uchenna.

She looked at him, and said I’m late, we would talk later, and she left.

The following morning Uchenna rushed to the stream to wait for Ulemma, knowing that she normally comes to that stream to fetch water, not quite long, she came, she was shocked to see Uchenna that early morning, “Chimo(My God)” she shouted in amazement.

I’m sorry, I never meant to scare you, said uchenna.

I just came so I can see you again and get to know you.

So they talked at length.

Weeks later they were already in love.

Uremma took Uchenna to her parents and he did the introduction according to their customs, as a sign of his marriage proposal. But his royal Identity was still hidden.

Ulemma now stays in Uchenna’s hut, cooks and does other house chores, she was his heart desire.

A woman who loves him for who he is.

She was humble, loyal and a loving maiden. That knows when her man is hungry, happy, sad and in pains, and knows how to make him happy and comfort him. “A true friend they say is one who walks in, when the rest of the world walks out.”

After the farming season, Ulemma returned home to help her parents, since she has not been fully married.

The next week Prince Uchenna, went to the Palace to break the news of his new found bride to his Father the King, His father was so happy and the next day they visited Ulemma’s home.

When Ulemma’s family saw Uchenna in his royal attire with his dad, his mum and kinsmen they were surprised. And he told them how happy he was to have found a virtuous woman in their family, and narrated why he had to disguise himself in search of a true love.

“Bia Lere oh” (Come and see oh), Ulemma’s mum shouted, and the whole villagers gathered, and were all astonished to see that their most generous yam farmer is a Prince, they were all happy and that day Prince Uchenna got married to Ulemma.

Ulemma’s family and village were elevated because of that connection.

The marriage was blessed with a son “Ugonna” and a daughter Nkechi. When the king died, Uchenna was crowned king, and Ulemma his Queen, and their kids were Prince and Princess and they lived happy ever after.

Blame it on me

Mrs Ali was an entrepreneur, after her husband’s death, she was managing her husband’s resources with her 4 kids; Ken, Steve, Tina and Tricia.

One evening when Mrs Ali was driving home from work, on her way, she saw a young man bleeding seriously, she thought of leaving him behind, but she couldn’t, so she reversed her Jeep and stopped, took him to the hospital, and made sure they saved his life, took him home fed and sheltered him till he recovered.

When the young man recovered he asked her “Where am I?” she answered “In my House,” I saw you bleeding yesterday and I saved your life.

Thanks ma, I’m grateful. The boy replied.

Who are you? Mrs Ali asked looking at the poor little boy.

I am Benneth Benito, he answered and slept off.

Some days later, Benneth was fully strong and was still under the woman’s roof, since all her children are in hostel. One cool breezing morning Benneth woke up did all his chores and walked to the sitting room, looking at Mrs Ali, he said thanks ma for all your love, care, clothing, and shelter, thanks for saving my life and feeding me like royalty, I’m totally grateful to you, but Ma, I’ve recovered and now strong, so I want to go, she pleaded for him to stay a little longer, but he refused. So Mrs Ali went to her save and brought out #30,000(Thirty Thousand Naira) and gave to him.

He shouted “All this for me?” It’s nothing Mrs Ali said, Take it, Thank you Ma, Said Benneth, don’t mention replied Mrs Ali.

Benneth got to his rented apartment, his gang came and they drank, clubbed, smoked and did all sorts of dirty things together.

When the party was over the gang leader called for an emergency meeting and told them that there is a new mission.

Beneth had wanted to leave the gang after the incidence that nearly took his life, before Mrs Ali saved him. But there code is “There is no going back.”

It was a holiday season, they were 5 in number, well-armed, with “Terror Badoski” as their leader, and everyone was on mask. Benneth never knew that the house they were to rob also belonged to Mrs Ali. When they knocked, Tricia Mrs Ali’s last born asked who is knocking. They never replied but the robbers forced themselves into the house.

Bring all the money in this house, “Your money or your life?” Mrs Ali brought out the #500,000(Five Hundred Thousand Naira) she had in the house that she wanted to pay into the bank the next day. Kenneth never recognized Mrs Ali because he was high on drugs. He shot and killed Patricia, and when they were about to leave, he looked closely at the woman; he was shocked that it was Mrs Ali and that it was her daughter he just killed.

With anger he told Terror their leader to spare the woman’s life and the money as well. Benneth was the 2nd in command, and he was also a Don.

They left the place without killing Mrs Ali and without the money.

His crew were all angry with him, then Terror pointed a gun at him “Why you wan pour sand sand for my Carry” (why spoil our plans). I’m sorry please I will explain Said Benneth.

And he narrated to them how Mrs Ali saved his life after their last mission and how he had just done her bad by killing her last born Tricia, few of his crew members understood him and others were his enemy, then he broke out to become a born-again.

Months later he went to Mrs Ali’s house, with his Pastor, confessed how he killed Tricia, how she saved him from a near death experience and finally pleaded for her forgiveness.

She arrested him and years later forgave him, he was released, got married, the two families where united, and they lived happily ever after.

The unpronounced Love

Ben was a very handsome and hardworking man, but he wasn’t good at expressing his feelings openly. Every time Ben’s parents tell him “Do and get a wife, you’re not getting any younger, or do you want us to do it for you?” No, he always answers. I will find one myself. His friends will tell him, “Learn how to talk to a girl” stop dying in silence.

Rita was a very beautiful girl; fair in complexion, she had curly hairs, white eyes, round cheeks, a narrow nose, white finger and toe nails, black and hairy eye brows, a small round chin, and a broad face. Ben and Rita were good friends. Ben loved Rita but never had the boldness to tell her.

Ben whenever he comes back from the farm brings corn, yam, cassava or vegetables for Rita, he helps her in house chores, and she does same for him.

They were fond of themselves; Plays, hugs and eat together. And had been friends since childhood, one day Ben and Rita went to view the beautiful moon shinning and radiating at their community beach, and the water waves as well.

Playing with someone you love is quite an enthusiasm, and Ben was really happy being around Rita. She was also happy seeing someone to talk to, stroll, dance and play with.

Ben looked at her and said “Rita I” and stopped, she said I what? Hey don’t bother is nothing important, He said, while it was, she said say it, I want to hear it. She persuaded for long, but out of fear of expressions, Ben couldn’t speak, but ended up changing the subject.

Time was far spent, so they noticed they’ve stayed long, so they made their ways back home.

The following morning, Ben met with his 3 friends; Cyril, Leo and Pete, His friends shouted “long time no see” we guess apart from work, you’ve been busy with Rita right? A girl you desire but no effort. Ben said that’s why I’m here. “Eh I know he would come” said Leo. Cyril the master planner was their legislature, while Pete was the Judiciary and Leo executive.

Cyril told Ben, now is the time for you to tell Rita in words, how much you love her and wants to marry her, before it’s too late, Pete echoed “Do it, because I’ve checked it, you’d either get a Yes or No answer.” Leo said “I’ve tried it, I succeeded, and don’t you know Vera? She’s my girl, stop sleeping or day dreaming, wake up to the realities of life. He was happy and left encouraged and prepared.

Unfortunately Ben got shocking news on his way to Rita’s house; he saw people carrying drinks, pots and all sort of cooking utensils. Where are they carrying these things to? He asked a girl that was passing by, so you’ve not heard? She asked, heard what? Ben replied. Okay, let me tell you, Rita the daughter of Ikoku, will be proposed to today by Clark, Mazi Odogwu’s son who came back from Obodo-Oyibo America. Ben was so weak; it looks as if he had been poured cold water. Is anything the matter? The girl asked him, don’t worry I’m fine he said. He left the place, and dropped the idea and effort of going to confront Rita and propose to her. He went to a local bar in their village and drank himself to stupor. His friends heard it, came and took him home.

When did you start drinking? Why do you want to kill yourself? His friends asked him, all he could say was, “I need Rita” that is my problem. So he told them what happened, how someone else is about to propose to Rita, his friends were filled with sympathy, Cyril and Leo went to meet with Rita, While Pete was left to watch over Ben before he does something stupid.

Rita’s home was filled with people, lots of laughter, merriments and cultural music. The 2 Friends knew their mission; they came in respect of their beloved friend Ben. So not quite long Leo sighted Rita, “There she is” he said, that’s quite a chance, Cyril Said, Let us go and meet her. Rita was sitting at the Veranda, so they rushed to see her and explain things to her.

Rita was dressed in a lovely way, but she never liked Clark, but her Parents want her to marry him. She was missing Ben’s presence. She was just troubled within herself, Cyril and Leo took her out and she asked “What is the problem?”

It’s Ben, they replied. What is wrong with Ben? She asked. “The truth is he loves you,” they both said in a chorus form, as a matter of fact, he wanted to propose to you today, before he heard a shocking news that you are to be proposed to today by Clark, Mazi Odogwu’s son. So he went to the bar and drank himself to stupor, when we took him home after series of questioning he said all he wanted was just you that he would die without you. Leo looked at her and said “Rita you love Ben” how did you know that? She asked, Ben makes you happy, knows all about you, likes and adores you, Rita was moved by those words and said “Let me go and see him, please take me to him now.”

When they came to Ben’s home he was still crying and saying, “I need my Rita, I can’t afford to lose her.” She heard those words and was astounded, they later embraced each other, and there and then he proposed to her, she accepted and they became lovers, now the unpronounced love had been pronounced. Clark and his parents were disappointed, they left regretfully “We wouldn’t have wasted so much”

They exclaimed.

Later on Ben and Rita got married, Leo and Vere, Cyril found Nora, While Pete Lois, they all wedded same day.

So if you have feelings, say it out, he/she might not understand you from works, Money, acts of service or help you are rendering. Be bold, wise and vocal.

The Boy who spent wrongly

Lester was a fortunate boy; he got a job immediately after graduation. He was a good Christian but left the faith when he started making money.

He was living a totally different kind of life; he started drinking, smoking, gambling, clubbing and above all womanizing. His parents warned him but he wouldn’t listen. Why are you lavishing your money in something that is un-productive? His mum asked him, “It’s my life” he responded.

Have you gone mad? Chief Jack his dad asked angrily.

Am I not old enough to know what’s good and bad for me? He asked his parents, fine, he said, I’m not mad, but I want to be on my own.

Lester walked out of his parents and went to club, he met his friends; Max, Scott and his girl Irene, and they danced, drank, smoked, and ended up having what he called “fun.” He spent a lot of money there, as a matter of fact; he paid the bills of his friends, his girl and himself. They were hailing him “flirting papa, King of the party, smooth operator” he was happy being praised and spent unreasonably. He never wanted to take a second thought of what his parents were telling him.

The next morning, he went to work very late, his boss was angry and said “if this continues, I will have you fired” do you understand? “Yes sir” he replied.

Go to your office, his boss told him, you have some documents to sign, you know you are the personnel manager.

When he got to his office, he signed those documents, did other office works and went for break, came back attended to employees, gave monthly incentives to his staff. He loved his job since it was his source of income. Later that day he went clubbing.

Brian his old time friend visited his office the next morning, Lester was so happy, is this you? Where on earth have you been? I’ve been within the country trying to create something unique Brian answered.

That reminds me, Lester said, are you the owner of Brian’s enterprises Limited? Yes Brian answered and the real estate in new layout here in this town, and the famously acclaimed wealthiest man in this town? Lester added, Yes bro said Brian, It’s the Lord’s doing. So then you must be on money then! Lester said. Bro you know you’ve been my friend back when we were teens? Yes off course, replied Lester. I came for your betterment, I’ve seen your parents, I’ve also heard of your misconduct.

Who has made you a judge over my affairs “Mr Rich Man?” So you now take sides with my parents? Okay just tell why you’re here, simple.

I came to tell you the ways you can invest productively, go on Lester replied in anger. Thanks Brian said, One, you must re-start Church, pay your tithes, give offerings, and give alms and charity.

Buy shares, invest in real estate, build up a business system, you have the money now; utilize it very well, so you will grow financially.

I guessed you’ve finished your sermon? Asked Lester aggressively, But I wasn’t preaching? Brian replied, you were teaching I suppose said Lester.

So you don’t want to yield to my advice? Do you think spending money going to clubs and flirting with girls will do you any good? You’re spending and you’re not receiving financial profits from these things, “It’s none of your business” Lester told Brian.

Leave my office now, before I call the security, said Lester. “So you want to throw me out? Because I offered you an advice to free you, well I will leave, but I pray you’ll change soon” Brian said and left.

Don’t bother to call, come or try to look for me, “mind you, am on my own” not you or my parents can change who I am. Said Lester.

Brian left his office, feeling pity for him.

He came back from work, went to hang up with his friends, and told them what has happened, and asked; do you guys buy the idea? Don’t mind Brian, his bad friends told him, he wants to fool you. You think so? He asked, yes they answered, but he’s been my friend way back? And so, don’t you know he can still betray you? What if I follow his opinion, I might hit his kind of success? But you’re already successful, his friends said, what if this job I’m doing terminates? What will be my fate? Failure isn’t it? Stop this, nothing would happen to your job, they all said.

There are returns in what he said, even if I lost my job, I have a cash flow, a running business, stop this man, his friends shouted at him, drink up, feel free, come on have fun, don’t forget that you’re the Don, you know.

Three months later, Lester lost his job, his house and cars, because he had some outstanding debts didn’t pay, above all he lost his friends. He went to the club with no money to meet with his friends, but to his greatest surprise, they caused him and drove him away, because he had no money.

I thought I was your Don? Lester asked painfully, that was before when you had money, answered Max, I trained you out of school and gave you a job Lester said, and so what replied Scott, you too, I did same to you and your family.

He turned his eyes and saw who was coming, it was Irene his girl, hi honey, he said “who’s your honey?” you poor and useless man, she said, so you’ve forgotten so soon, that I opened this bar and club for you, with my money, upgraded you and trained your brothers. In spite of all I did to you three, you pay me back with evil, had I known I would have listened to my parents and my friend Brian, you’ve all deceived me and had gotten what you wanted.

My Dad will look at me and say “Son you’re a disgrace to this family” “I’m leaving, but I wish I never met people like you guys, get out they shouted. Lester was confused and don’t know where to go to, whether to his parents or to his friend Brian, he was on his was to drown himself at the lagoon.

Brian found him, stopped him, and took him home, to his parents; he later repented, got another job at Brian’s enterprises limited. Invested wisely, Brian and Lester found their missing ribs, and both got married same day and lived happily.

So don’t spend wrongly, spend wisely and learn to accept good counsel to improve your mental, financial and physical power.

Udara Tree

Long ago in the town of Ekene, there was na tree called Udara Tree, it’s fruit was so sweet and it was close to the village cemetery, and nobody goes there at night fall.

Ochendu was a brave young man, he was a stranger, and he came to Ekene village with his little brother Ifeanyi to stay with their mother, since it was there mother’s home town. He joined in farming, hunting, and does whatsoever his mum wants him to do; he was a very hardworking man and was respectful and loyal to everybody. He and his little brother Ifeanyi always join the villagers whenever it is Udara season to pick Udara. It was a yellowish, sweet and gum like fruit, it colours green when it is not ripe, they don’t stone it, they only pick, it was believed that when you stone it, it won’t be sweet when it falls and that the spirits in it will be angry.

They don’t also climb it because it was told that when someone tries to climb, the Udara Tree would open and swallow the person, that it had happened in the past and the person was never found, so the Elders instructed the young people to avoid climbing and stoning but should only pick, and make sure they are back before nightfall. What a strange belief? Ifeanyi asked Ochendu, we have to abide by it, alright, and okay I’ve heard you, let’s go home now bro mama would be waiting, Ifeanyi said.

The two brothers loved each other, so they rushed home, before it’s too late, they gave their Udara fruits to their mother, had dinner and slept. Mrs Okoro the mother of Ochendu and Ifeanyi, woke up early, did all the house chores, and started cooking. Mama you’re awake, said Ochendu, “yes oh my son” she replied, Immediately Ifeanyi came and greeted his mum “Mama good morning” morning my son, she replied, how was your night, “fine” they both answered.

I’m glad you’re both awake, we will soon go to the farm to plant some cassava stems, corn and weed the farm also. Let’s do and go now before the sun comes up, said Ifeanyi, don’t be in such haste, Ochendo replied Ifeanyi. We will eat first and take some food to the farm, their mother told them, but go and prepare now. After eating they left for the farm, planted the cassava stems, corns and weeded the whole farm.

The boys loved their mother and do everything she asks. As a matter of fact; they fetch fire woods, water, sweep and does the house works, but she as a mum assist at times. Whenever she sees that they’ve worked very hard, she cooks delicious meals, serve them and thank them for their loyalty. She sometimes does the house chores herself, when she sees they’ve worked so hard the previous day.

Whenever the return from the farm, the boys will drop their farm tools, basket, take their baths and sit close to the fire in their kitchen waiting for mum to dish food. And after eating they all laugh, smile and stay happy.

Early in the morning Ochendu and Ifeanyi had woke up, did their house chores and went to meet with the village boys, so they would all go to pick Udara.

They got there picked as many as they wanted, started playing and coming back slowly, Ochendo and his brother left them and rushed home. Where did the 2

of you go to? Their mum asked angrily, we went to pick Udara, they answered, and don’t you eat at home? Or is it that Udara that will serve as food for you?

We are sorry mother, they replied, get out of my face, she said, they went inside their hut and knew they have done wrong by not telling their mum before they left the house that morning. I feel it is my fault, Ochendu said, It’s our fault, not just you answered Ifeanyi. We have to kill a big rabbit to beg mama, Ifeanyi suggested, that’s right, Ochendu Agreed.

They sneaked out of the house and went for hunting; successfully for them they killed a very big rabbit, came home and prepared it. What are you boys cooking? Mama asked, don’t worry mama, we will tell you later, Ochendo answered, they finished cooking and served their mum, they were both kneeling down, mother we love you they said, and we are sorry for going to pick Udara without your consent, so we prepared this so as to gain your forgiveness, they said in tears, sweet mama we love. I’ve forgiven you two, you’re my sons and I hold no grudge, stand up its okay, and stop crying. Thank you mama, they both said and they enjoyed the meat together, later licked the Udara fruits, and ate dinner, heard stories from their mum and finally went to bed.

The next day, when it was almost nightfall, Ifeanyi sneaked out of the house alone, to pick Udara, knowing it was against the laws of the land, he saw some friends and asked them to come with him, they refused because they knew it was wrong, he left with a lantern, and the lantern was very bright, he got to the tree un-afraid he searched for Udara fruits but never found any, he decided to pick some stones, stoned and some Udara fruits fell, he picked and put all into his bag, but he wasn’t satisfied, so he decided to climb, knowing that the tree forbids it, stubbornly climbed up. At first nothing happened, he got up shake the tree, many Udara fruits fell down, he shouted, “Why should people fear this tree? It can’t harm me” Immediately the tree swallowed him, he was shocked seeing the tree opening and creating a worm hole and he was locked inside the tree.

Those of Ifeanyi’s friends that saw him were waiting at the playground for his return, since that is the only route that leads to his house. They waited for so long, but he never returned. So they went to their house to tell Ochendo about his brother’s where whereabouts, Ochendu and his mother had been looking for him all round. When the news came, Ochendu picked up his cutlass, lantern and his hunting gun, “go in peace my son,” his mum, pronounced in tears.

Ochendu got their alone, confronted the spirits, defeated them and came back home with his brother Ifeanyi. There was joy and since then the Udara tree had no law again.

So don’t be greedy, but be brave to face your worst fear, and live on.

Heavy Weight Men

John was a very strong man, and a great wrestler, he had never fallen before, he can pull away trees from anywhere, no matter the size. Whenever any tree falls across the road he was always called to remove it. He was the heavyweight champion in their local community wrestling, and he was tall and huge, a handsome young looking man. Moreover he was a money lender, and collects lands, gold, or other valuables as collateral. When he is walking in the streets, everybody praises him, but he wasn’t a proud person, he was a humble and good person, no matter his height he plays with children.

Who is in charge here? Asked a man who came to his shop, I am John the owner of this shop, he replied the stranger. I am Ikenga from the neighbouring village, I need a huge loan, and here are my gold’s as collateral. John gave him the money and he left. Ikenga was a very great man, but he wasn’t troublesome. Whenever he sleeps, the next morning to wake him up his boys has to use a sledge hammer. Imagine being hit with a sledge hammer? How painful it would be, you might even die, but to Ikenga it was nothing painful at all, he feels no pain, but disturbed. Stone, hit the sledge hammer on his nose, that’s where I not your boss? Ikenga Screamed.

Good morning boss, I’m happy you are awake. Have you delivered those yam tubers I gave you to give to Mazi Odozi? Ikenga asked Stone his boy, yes boss, he answered, is that why you came early this morning to disturb my sleep? His boss asked, I’m sorry boss, he said, okay guys get back to work now, Ikenga commanded.

He had a very large yam barn, and his boys helps him in exporting it to other village markets, and people from far and near comes to his barn to buy yam. The reason Ikenga borrowed money from John was so he could acquire more lands. Let’s work hard, the rainy season will soon come, we have to make sure we double our profits, plant now so we can harvest before the rain falls, yes boss his boys shouted happily, they worked and later retired home, to clean up and rest.

Ikenga’s boys loved him so much because he was good to them and he was more like a father to them, Ikenga’s children were all married. So he was just leaving with his wife and his boys. His wife was always shocked by the harmer hitting process her husband undergoes before waking up, except he wakes by himself.

John and Ikenga are highly reputable. Three afor market days have passed and Ikenga hasn’t paid his debt to John. John was angry and went to Ikenga’s community, business hadn’t been good for Ikenga, if not he would have paid his debt to John, he knew there would be extra charges since the repayment date has exceeded, he was supposed to pay on the 2nd afor market.

John saw a lot of people, traders, farmers, children and all sorts of things in Ikenga’s community. It was completely different from his home. I’m looking for Ikenga? He asked a fisherman that was just coming back from fishing. What’s your name? The man asked him, I’m John from Nwa-afor village. So you’re the great John we’ve been hearing about? The fisherman said “Ikenga you seek is a great man, but I will take you to his house, since you are also a great man. I hope there is no problem? Yes, John nodded his head and they got there.

The fisherman greeted Ikenga’s boys, and they answered. Is your boss at home? Asked the fisherman, yes they answered. Okay wake him up, tell him the man he owes is here. John saw the sledge hammer they used to wake Ikenga up. The first hit on his nose was loud and Ikenga said “Stop Mosquitos” John did it himself and woke him.

Ikenga woke up, in anger chased John and got to a spot, where a big Iroko tree has fallen across the road, John threw it away effortlessly. Continued his race and escaped. Ikenga out of fear ran back home, because haven’t seen a man like John before.

The truth is these men had strange powers; Ikenga later paid up and became friends with John.

The Philanthropist

Evelyn was a rich and famous young lady, she was single and searching, she helps the poor. Whenever she’s around people go to her for money, she likes helping those in need. Many men had come and go, she had been deceived by some who promised to marry her, but are just after her money. She noticed it and quitted those relationships, she was a good Christian; she goes to church, pays her tithes, vows, offerings, give alms and owns a charity organization. But the thought of settling down, was her most prayer point, at work, outings and other places, at times she get embarrassed because of it.

It’s true that good people like her is hard to come by, despite all, she helps without looking back. We’ve decided to make you the Managing Director (MD) of this company, said the board of directors in Evelyn’s company.

Me? MD of Bethels Construction Limited? Yes they answered, you’ve been humble, hardworking and generous, you’ve done so very well and you deserve it. I thank you all, and I promise to keep up the good work, she said. They had an after party after work, friends, family and business associates were all present, and Evelyn met some new business partners there.

It was at that party she met Douglas, a nice looking wealthy man, and owns he owns Doug’s Petroleum Company. That evening all he could discuss with Evelyn was strictly business, later on friendship. She wasn’t optimistic about this guy, because she never needed another heart break. Doug was quite persuasive and said “Eve just give me a chance” I’m not like the other guys you know. Everybody claims to be transparent in a relationship, but the truth is everyone lies, people don’t seem to be trusted, I believe you’ll agree with me on that? Evelyn Asked. I’m quite different give me a chance and you’ll see that I’m right, “its beauty that captures your attention; but personality that captures your heart.”

You seem to have a sugar coated mouth? Evelyn Asked. Months later, they became lovers, Evelyn was so happy, Dough was a real player a “Philanderer” and she never knew about this. Honey when are you going to see my people? Asked Evelyn, which people? Douglas asked, my family of course, she answered.

Very soon, when I’m ready, Douglas told her harshly. To avoid trouble she never said any more words, she was on leave, so she and her Charity foundation visited orphanages and gave alms, books and scholarships to them. Everyone loved her.

Douglas was not depending on Evelyn for anything, he had everything money can buy, and has started treating Evelyn like a nobody. Surprisingly Evelyn was on her way back home from the market, sweet heart I’m home, she shouted, but no reply, she shouted it twice, still no answer, she dropped her bag, rushed to their bedroom and got the shock of her life. She met her beloved Douglas, sleeping with another woman. What is going on here? She asked, none of your business, Doug replied. So you have no remorse, you cheat, you just broke my heart, and Evelyn started crying. Dough threw Eve out of his house brutally.

Since Evelyn was still on her 1month leave, she went to her village. One day she was bathing and had a knock on her door, she quickly tied her towel came out, found out that it was those begging for alms, he gave them and they left. As she just entered her Jacuzzi, she had another knock. Who is that she shouted? I’m Francis the blind man. Since he was blind she decided to come out naked. Rushed to her room brought money, as she was trying to give it to him, he said, “I can see” thanks Evelyn, your nakedness have opened my eyes. The blind man said. Are you joking? She asked. No he replied, dropped his stick (walking aid) and hugged her.

Some months later after courtship, they got married, gave birth to twin; Victor and Victoria.

She got him a job, sent their children to hostel school, and lived happily there-after.

Please do good, God will answer you in his own time, you’re blessed.

The Mask of Odu

In the land of Ikutu, they had a very strong mask in their shrine called “The Mask of Odu,” everyone feared and respected this deity, but it wasn’t harmful, they celebrated new yam festivals and offered sacrifices to it, both old, young and small, fat and thin, everybody, comes out to dance for their god of strength.

The Mask of Odu gives power to their village warriors and makes them to win their wars. Ikutu Community has never been defeated in war before; they had elbowed bodied young men, strong Army and a good king. Some of the elders were evil men and wasn’t happy with the good ones around, they ended every day at the king’s palace fighting themselves.

Enough, stop the fighting says the king. The white men are trying to take what rightfully belongs to us, can’t you see? Said Obiefuna one of the good elders. What did you know? This little boy, is it not just some years ago you became an elder? Asked Otumogpo, a bad elder.

My elder, my final decision on this is that, we won’t sell The Mask of Odu to them; it is a taboo, a big sacrilege. The gods forbid, says the king. As you wish your majesty, the elders replied.

Moreover the white men needed that mask very seriously, and are ready to pay any amount just to have it. It was indeed a sacred mask, but it doesn’t matter to them, all they want is just to go with it, many villagers wondered what they wanted it for? But as the king has spoken, and the town crier, had passed the message, the mask will not be sold to the whites.

Mazi Otu-mo-gpo and some other elders had collaborated with the white men to steal the mask secretly. The white men paid them huge amounts of money; they succeeded in killing the chief priest Oti-ti-gpo and made away with the mask.

The white men left that night, and Otu-mo-gpo and his supporters shared the money that night and went their different ways. In the morning the news came that “The Mask of Odu” was missing and that the chief priest was dead. Nothing like this had ever happened before in Ikutu land, the king summoned his elders to talk about it.

I greet you my people, the king greeted.

Long live our king, the people replied.

I hope you elders have heard of the painful incidence in this village?

Yes oh our king, they answered.

What will be the solution to this problem? He asked.

Let’s forget it, said Otu-mo-gpo.

I agree with you, said his supporters.

How dare you say such a thing? Asked Obiefuna.

Infact my king we have to invite Nwa-ya-eke, she’s a native doctor from the neighbouring village, and we all have to swear.

Swear what? The bad elders shouted out of fear.

We suppose Obi-efuna is right! Supported the good elders.

My king “it is better to look for the black goat when it is still day, because when night comes you can’t see it” Obi-efuna commented.

The king took action, weeks later Otu-mo-gpo and his supporters, admitted their sins and died, never lived to enjoy the money they made from the sale.

A son of Ikutu land was living in the land of the whites, his name was Ojum, he was sent there by his father’s friend a white man.

He was the son of the king; he went there for studies and was doing well academically. One day he decided to take a stroll with his friends to the national museum to see some works of art.

You mean people can carve and mould things like this? Ojum asked his friends yes and even more than this. I can’t believe this! He said, you have to believe it, it’s true one of his friends said. Then they went separate ways, each to a row.

Ojum heard his name “Ojum son of Ikutu Land, heir apparent to the throne of Ikutu kingdom.” Ojum was afraid, because none has called him like that before. Went backwards, turned around and found the mask talking, he quickly recognized it, and said “The Mask of Odu” what are you doing here?

The white men stole me and locked me here, I’ve been here for long, furthermore, you’ll be the one to free me here and take me home.

Back in the village things was getting worse and without the mask all of them will perish painfully, crops are dying, animals and humans.

So you mean I Ojum will take you home? Yes my son, the mask answered, and you must do that quickly and secretly, immediately I get out I will protect and lead you through.

I understand that you’ve just finished your studies recently, and it’s time to go home. Yes our great oracle, Ojum answered.

He did as instructed and escaped with the mask of Odu.

The community was happy to welcome Prince Ojum, the king’s son, but astonishing to them he came back with The Mask of Odu, and presented the deity before the people, and explained how the mask found him, before he found it.

Celebration was at its peak taking place in the land. A new chief priest was selected. The crops in the village, animals, birds and humans were no longer dying.

Happiness and laughter was everywhere, Nwa-ya-eke, was successfully rewarded and the good elders as well.

They started gaining their stand again as the strongest community, reclaiming their land that was lost in battle, expanding their territories and making sure everyone in the village is properly looked after.

Ojum built a school with the help of the knowledge he got from the white man’s land. Some white men were also employed to help facilitate the affairs of the school, and to make sure the school is at its best. His father the king supported him and so many others, young and old, small and great, no matter your size or colour were welcomed to the school. It was named “Ikutu Central School.”

A villager from far and near comes there, and Ojum was the “Head Master” the people was happy, he later got married, gave birth to four children.

They celebrated their new yam festival and gave sacrifices to “The Mask of Odu,” and lived on.

The community later embraced Christianity, when Ojum became king, and they lived happily thereafter.

O

Two Sisters

Nne-Oma and Chigemezu were daughters of Udoka, their father was late, but their mum was taking care of them.

Let’s go to the farm, Udoka tells her children, yes mama they replied. The girls were hardworking and respects their mum so much, they went to the farm, worked and came back home, their mum prepared food and they all ate and went to bed.

Nne-Oma was fair in complexion, while Chigemezu was black, Nne-Oma took her mum’s colour, while Chigemezu her dad’s. Whenever they want to go out, they always go together.

Beautiful young maidens of our tribe, the boys around call them. But they were decent and disciplined. Moreover they were not cheap girls; they had their prides (Virginity). And were loyal and obedient to their elders.

In the village they stood as an example for others to emulate.

Parents while correcting their children use the word “Can’t you see Nne-Oma and Chigemezu? The daughters of Udoka, how they behave, they respect and loves their mother.”

Udoka was proud of her children, and buys them clothes whenever she sells some of her farm produce and made nice sales.

Chigemezu was younger than Nne-Oma, but she sometimes insults and disagrees with her elder sister.

All this was a small thing, because Nne-Oma forgives her and takes no offence of her characters, but tries to correct her always.

Udoka the mother of the two girls, called her daughters, “I am going to the farm” she said, and when you’re hungry, take the yam and snail I left in the kitchen. Mind you, roast the yam before the snail, she said to Nne-Oma and Chigemezu. We will do exactly as you’ve said, they answered together.

Their mother left for farm and not quite long, the girls were hungry, let’s get the yam and the snail outside, said Nne-Oma, which they did. Now I’m going to put the yam first in the fire, No it’s the snail first Chigemezu said, don’t you know that putting the snail first will quench the fire?

Nne-Oma asked.

Mama knew it, that’s why she made fire and left, nowhere to get fire around, Nne-Oma added.

I’m not going to listen to you, I’ll roast the snail first, and that’s my own, Chigemezu spoke bitterly.

You mean you won’t follow my advice as your elder sister? Asked Nne-Oma, so you’ve grown to insult me? Well, let’s see, she said.

She tried putting the yam into the fire, but Chigemezu stopped her, they fought and later Nne-Oma said “Okay, let’s see if the fire wouldn’t quench.”

Chigemezu was very happy, and she put the snail in the fire, in a short while the snail started bringing out the waters in it, and before they knew it, the fire quenched.

Where would we get fire? Chigemezu asked.

You and who? Nne-Oma asked, I’m waiting for mama, and that’s it. Out of love Nne-Oma followed her sister to look for fire, mistakenly they followed the wrong path and found themselves in the forest, they saw so many scary thing like; skeletons, corpse, and some others. The girls were highly terrified and they kept on going, got to a hut in the forest, smoke was coming out there.

I think we can get fire here! Chigemezu suggested, you might be right sister, replied Nne-Oma. They got in and knocked at the door, it was a skeleton that came to open the door.

Come in, he said and they went in, with fear in their minds, they saw an old woman with grey hairs and they told her, all they wanted was to take some fire and leave.

My children you’d have to eat first, the old woman said.

No, they replied.

When Udoka came back, called her children, no answer, checked and saw the yam and snail, she shouted. The youths of the land came, organized a search party and went to the forest.

We are okay, thank you, the two girls told the old woman, night was fast approaching and they want to leave before night falls.

After allowing them to take the fire, the old woman said “You must eat or you’d die,” no one leaves my house without eating.

Luckily for the 2 girls the youths came on time and saved them. The old woman disappeared with the skeleton.

The youths took the girls home and celebrated.

Learn from your seniors, don’t think you know it all, make no such mistake, but grow.

The Saucy Girl

Oma was a young pretty girl from a wealthy family. She had all she ever wanted at her door step. But she was living a wayward life.

Whenever Oma does things that are not pleasant, her mum supports her, but her dad kicks against it.

Her friends were the rude type and she likes partying a lot, she lived a life of luxury and never took advice from no one.

One day she was invited to church by her friend Adaku, she went, but since she’s not always interested in the things of God, she couldn’t stay long and she left the church.

The life Oma lived affected her negatively, so many suitors came and they left due to her attitude and the stories of her misconduct and immoral sexual lifestyle.

Her parents were not happy, but they were the ones that spoilt her. As the bible says “Spear the rod and spoil the child.” (Proverbs 13:24) Two years later, Oma became ill, when she was diagnosed she was HIV Positive.

I’m finished, she cried. So my life has come to an end?

Take heart, Dr Elbert told her, and she left the hospital in tears.

It was not quite long her parents found out.

“Ewo Ari ri Egbu wo nu mo” Oma’s mum cried.

The dad on the other side was disappointed of his daughter.

All Oma’s rude, and bad friends ran away from her, Oma that was very saucy began talking to people politely and listening to advice.

AT THE PASTOR’S OFFICE

“Living a life of purpose is good,” Pastor James said, Adaku looked at her friend Oma with tears in her eyes said “you know I warned you.”

After series of counselling, Pastor James told Oma that there is a solution to your problem, she asked how? Only Jesus can save you! He answered her. Jesus? I never was a Christian and was not dedicated to church service. I’m so sinful to be saved by Jesus, In fact, I liked clubbing and partying and I was so saucy.

“If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:19. The Pastor Quoted from the Bible.

Really? Yes the Pastor answered.

So she confessed Christ as her personal lord and saviour, confessed her sins, and the pastor prayed for her and the miracle she least expected happened, immediately she was healed.

The next day she went for a medical test and found out that she was now HIV AIDS negative, no more sickness, she couldn’t believe, she went to the next hospital and it was still negative.

She quickly ran to Church to brake the good news, the whole Church was happy, her parents were so happy that they called for a thanksgiving and she gave a big testimony of how The Lord has saved her life. Adaku was happy, And Oma Thanked Adaku for leading her to Christ. And the Pastor Blessed her.

Weeks later, Mike a promising young man, proposed to marry Oma, she accepted. After courtship, they got married.

It was the talk of the town, Oma the saucy girl is now a changed person and she’s now married.
