Double Heroides from Classical Roman times, and Christopher Marlowe also wrote a poetic yet incomplete version of the tale entitled Hero and Leander. Marlowe’s version was published in 1598, and Shakespeare was clearly familiar with it.

Despite Rosalind’s rational arguments about lovers and their deaths, Orlando protests that even Rosalind’s frown could kill him (at line 94). Rosalind disregards Orlando’s assertion as nonsense, but she agrees to stop being disagreeable.
