Developing web pages and websites is great fun. There is nothing I like more than tinkering with the layout and graphics on a website to make sure that the page is just right. I have spent countless hours creating web page header graphics that look exactly what I want, and I love browsing istockphotos.com looking for just the right photo to use as part of a graphic, but...

I know its not the best use of my business time. Promoting my websites is much more important. In fact every good marketeer knows that they should be spending 80% of their time on website promotion! It sounds like a lot but its a fact – you must develop a sales and marketing mindset to succeed on the web.

In order to sell your products on the web you need a website and a company that will host your website. The more professional looking your website is the better as it adds credibility. However weather you develop your own website or pay someone to do it don't go overboard with fancy graphics, javascript, flash animations etc. You want to keep your websites simple. That way the usability is higher and it is easy for visitors to read, easy to maintain and easy to evolve with your growing business. And its less expensive.

There are two key steps here:
