CHAPTER 9. SEX IS FILTHY

In my time, sexual education was religious for both Christians and Jews.

The Catholic religion teacher was mainly concerned with finding out which of her students masturbated and which had impure thoughts (which always had to do with sex).

“Children, remember well that the body is the house of sin and that God died to cleanse our sins.

“Teacher, why did God make our bodies so that we would dirty ourselves?”

“To see who the Devil tempts in the sins of the flesh.”

“And what are the sins of the flesh?”

“Desire, sexual temptation, homosexuality and masturbation.”

We were all confused by these three sins because we didn’t understand what she meant. However, some of us knew that masturbation was translated as “jacking off,” a word we were more familiar with.

Esteban used to arouse the desires of his classmates by placing a small mirror under the religion teacher’s desk to see her underwear. He told us to go to the bathroom and “touch ourselves” while thinking about the mirror. I didn’t understand why I wasn’t interested in seeing underwear or someone masturbating in the bathroom.
