CHAPTER 11. A HOMOSEXUAL

SHOOTS HIMSELF

After Ramón, the gardener, an erotic relationship developed with the shoe shiner from Central Park, where my father used to take me every Sunday. This man would pinch and caress my legs while Antonio, who was always beyond good and evil, remained oblivious.

Then there was Pepe, the infamous pedophile from Barrio Escalante17. Jorge, my schoolmate, confessed that this man had a baseball team of children and that sooner or later, “he would touch them.”

Another place for erotic games was the cinema. The famous theaters in San José, such as Cine Rex, Cine Raventós, and Cine Capri, were hotbeds of lovers of young boys during their three o’clock showings. One of them was an attractive engineer who loved attending Dracula movies. During these screenings, he pretended to be scared by the jumps and bites of the Transylvanian count, jumped out of his seat, and stumbled onto my legs. In Cine Capri, European films were shown, and the boys would play among the seats. One would rest their arm on the chair and 17 Barrio Escalante is located to the east of San Jose, belonging to the Central Canton and the El Carmen District. Barrio Escalante connects the center of San Jose with San Pedro de Montes de Oca and was built in the 20th century. It was a large coffee plantation owned by the Escalante family.
