Freud theorized that a dominant or overbearing mother, often referred to as the “smothering mother,”
could cause confusion and unease in her male child by depriving him of a strong male role model. According to Freud, this lack of appropriate father figure would result in the child developing an unresolved Oedipus complex, leading to a homosexual orientation.
Similarly, Freud proposed that over-attachment or inadequate attachment to the mother figure in female children could contribute to homosexuality in women.
It is ironic that with Freud, the mother became the culprit of homosexuality. Now, the only one who was the most tolerant in the family and defended her gay son, became his greatest enemy.
