We only stayed for one day. After saving dozens of phone numbers I was given, we headed back to Washington.

I sat on the Amtrak train, tired but ecstatic from the triumph in the Big Apple. When I realized it, David brought me a gift he bought at Grand Central Station.

It’s a jade ring with gold. “I love you,” he says. “No more baths, I swear. I want you to be my lover.”

“Are you proposing marriage to me? In twenty-four hours, we went from an open relationship to a closed one?”

“Yes, and this includes the Senator. No more visits to the Capitol.”

Great promises that none would fulfill. But a marriage, and the first one, made me happy.
