Chapter 2: Get a Great Mug

Typically brewed in a pot or per cup, coffee is a drink that requires something to hold it. That is to say that you cannot enjoy a great mug of coffee without the mug! But, not all mugs are created equally and some are better than others. If you want to choose the perfect mug, the following are some tips that you can use to choose one from among the great line of products available on the market today!

1. Size

One of the most important considerations that you need to think about when choosing a perfect mug for your drinking needs is the size that you want. A standard mug holds about one cup of coffee. While this is great for the casual drinker or the individual that wants a little bit of coffee at a time, this is a great fit. But, the mugs that hold this tasty drink are much like the coffee flavors themselves and are not one-size-fits-all. Mugs can come in a wide variety of sizes. There are those that are tall with a narrow base. There are those that are wider and shorter. There are those that fit in a vehicle cup holder. There are those that do not. There are numerous different sizes of mugs that are available to the coffee drinker and the best way to choose the right one for you is to think about your drinking habits. If you are constantly refilling your single cup mug, then, you may want to invest in a bigger one. If you are okay with the slow sipping style that you enjoy, then, a single standard mug may just be your perfect pit. Think about it and choose your mug accordingly.

2. Words Have It

Mugs today can come in a wide variety of designs and aesthetics. This includes several mugs on the market that have cute sayings or pictures. You can even personalize a mug with your own pictures! As such, you want to consider what it is that you want your mug to say or if you want it to say anything at all. Remember, a cute, funny, or inspirational saying can get your day started on the right foot and may remind you of a special moment each time you drink out of it!

3. Lids or No?

More and more mugs are being made with optional lids. This is important for many reasons. Firstly, mugs with lids add another layer of protection. They help to protect when travelling as will be discussed in another chapter but also from particles entering into the drink. A lid is something that can be added to the top of mugs to help ensure the liquid inside stays protected as well as adds a level of insulation, too. For that reason, many individuals want a mug with at least the option of an added lid.

For others, though, they want their coffee exposed. The aromas are better lifted from the liquid and can waft through the air when the top is uncovered. Mugs without a lid also seem to be a better fit at indoor gatherings and adult parties. It is one less item to clean, and it allows for quick drinking at get-together. Many individuals that live in homes that do not have to worry about little kids and their sticky fingers getting in the drink or those that enjoy entertaining find that uncovered mugs are a great fit for their life and lifestyle.

4. Insulation

There is a reason that individuals do not put their coffee in thin cups. Unless an iced version, coffee is by nature a drink typically served very hot. Therefore, you want to make sure that your mug has some level of insulation. This is important for two reasons. Firstly, an insulated mug helps to keep the drink warm for a longer period of time. This means that the first sip and the last have the same chance of being the same temperature.

Another reason that insulation is important is because of the aforementioned nature of coffee itself. As a hot drink, your mug needs to protect more than just the temperature of the drink. It needs to protect your hands as well! Be sure that you protect yourself by choosing a mug that will keep the heat in while protecting your grip from extreme temperatures. You will thank yourself for it later!

5. Color

Your mug does not have to be bland. Just like you, it can stand out in a crowd or sea of cups. Therefore, consider the color that you want in your mug and look for an ideal hue match. There are hundreds of mugs available that make choosing the right one both exciting and a bit overwhelming at the same time. By knowing what color you want, you will better narrow down your choices and more quickly find that ideal match.

For instance, if you want a calming environment, then, you may want to choose a mug that has softer hues. Light blues, sea foam greens, and pale pastels are a great way to elicit that feeling of relaxation. For others, though, the mugs that they need to match their personalities are bright and bold. There is nothing wrong with standing out and shining even with your coffee mug. If this is what you want from your mug, then choose your favorite bold color. Reds, yellows, and blues each can bring a sense of whimsy and excitement to your life all with a coffee mug! Choose one color or mix and match. It really is that simple and yet, fun!

Why It MattersĀ

Believe it or not, the size and shape of your coffee mug can impact the flavors inside. A larger mug without a lid allows more air into the drink creating an aerated sip that can actually beautifully absorb the flavors of the atmosphere. Those with a lid or those that make the drink more concentrated in the mug can provide a pack of flavor that is a bit stronger. Therefore, consider what type of mug best suits your needs utilizing the above tips and you are sure to get the type of cup that you want. You may just make a fashion statement in the process, too!
