It is very important to understand that emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence, it is not the triumph of heart over head- it is the unique intersection of both. -DAVID CARUSO.

An alpha is a natural leader. ftost top, effective and successful leaders are alpha beings. They hold great vision, ensure quality, they are result oriented and move others to perform at a peak level.

Two distinguishable traits they possess are:

  • Social Skill/ Interpersonal Skill.
  • Emotional Intelligence.

Social skills are very vital for intercommunication and little can be achieved without good social skill and interpersonal skill on the side of the leader as he constantly has to meet and deal with humans.

Social/ interpersonal skills includes:

  • Verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Listening skill.
  • Negotiation skill.
  • Problem solving skill.
  • Decision making skill.
  • Assertiveness.

These skills contribute to:

  • Better relationship.
  • Better communication.
  • Greater efficiency.
  • Advancing career prospect.
  • Increased happiness.

Emotional intelligence on the other hand is the ability to identify and manage own emotions and emotions of others. It involves self- awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management.

It relieves stress, create effective communication, empathy, overcome challenge and defuse conflict.

Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

Emotional intelligence comes to play in leadership as it reduces unwarranted mistakes and ensures a smooth flow of operations. Alpha leaders ensure the use the elements of emotional intelligence in their dealings with followers.

Self-Awareness:

  • Keep journals on whatever you do.
  • Be calm and slow to anger.

Self-Regulation:

  • Know your value.
  • Be accountable for what you do.
  • Practice being calm. ftotivation:
  • Redefine your purpose.
  • Know your stand
  • Be hopeful Empathy:
  • Put yourself in someone else’s position.
  • Pay attention to body language.
  • Respond to feelings.

Social Skill:

  • Communicate politely with others.
  • Resolve conflicts fairly.
  • Learn how to praise and commend others.

In leadership, the truth is this, intelligence is needed to move forward but little can be attained without emotional intelligence.
