Overview

Grunwald Magnusson was always a lonely person, ever since childhood, where he struggled to understand people. People were his antagonists; people were always interfering in his life. Why did his father give him this ridiculous name, and leave him when he was only five years old? Only his father could tell him what to do with his life. He left him a coded message which took Grun months to decipher. The message was locked in a cabinet under the mirror which Grun was always frightened to look into. It had runic symbols running around it. His mother had given Grun the key when he turned twenty one. Grun had found another key in the cabinet and a letter. The letter was from his father. It said he must begin the quest? After much work, Grun finally managed to find the hidden box. Why didn’t his mother know anything about it, or anything relevant about his father? All she said was she was told by Grun’s father never to sell the house and to give him the key. Grun was on the threshold of something which would alter his life forever.  The box which was buried in the outhouse under the floor contained an assortment of things. It would take Grun three years to even begin to understand them. The main thing is the book. After another three months of decoding he found the second letter hidden behind the fitted bookshelf. The letter said that he should stand in front of the mirror at a certain time and he would be given certain powers! The time is the spring equinox. Grun stood in front of the mirror at twelve o clock. He meditated for several minutes with his eyes closed. When he opens them he can see a man writing a message on the inside of the mirror. He knows this man to be his father. Grun had copied the message which remained for ten minutes after his father disappeared. Grun is disappointed at not being able to talk with his father but he knows his father has Grun’s welfare at heart. Grun started to practice the exercises which were given him. The details are too secret to reveal here.

Scene six: Home & next door

The police are waiting for Grun as he walks up the path.

Inspector Mac Nee:

Good day, Mr. Magnusson, I am Inspector Mac Nee and this is detective sergeant Watkins. Can we have a word?

Grun:

Of course, come in.

Inspector;

Sorry about the time. I know you have been to a funeral. Please accept my condolences.

Grun:

Thank you, Inspector. What can I do for you?

Inspector   looking serious)

I want to ask you what you know of the murder of Mr. Thompson.

Grun:

Nothing.

Inspector:

We know that Derek Weston had a grudge against you for some reason. We also know he was a bully and a man who liked to brag. He was always going to land up in trouble, so it is no surprise that he wound up where he was. But John Thompson is another matter. We found a symbol on his bedroom door. At first we thought it was from some cult and then we found it to be a symbol of ancient origin.

Grun:

Oh, yes.

Inspector:

Yes, I think you know something about it.

Grun:

I know something about many things, Inspector but I had nothing to do with John’s death. What happened at the autopsy?

Inspector:

That’s another thing, the marks on his neck have now disappeared and it is being treated as a heart attack.

Grun:

What about the symbol?

Inspector:

We thought you might be able to account for it. We are stumped; mystical things are not one of the strong points of the police, so to speak.

Grun:

It is no secret that myself and my father before me were into things of the occult, but I cannot account for what happened to Mr. Thompson.

Inspector:

Can I ask you to step outside and take a look at it?

Grun:

Sure.

They walk outside and as they approach John’s house the policeman on duty at the door suddenly turns and moves away.

Inspector:

What is it, Jenkins?

Jenkins:

I thought I heard something, sir.

Inspector:

Like what?

Jenkins:

Like a snake, a sort of hiss.

Inspector:

Nonsense, Jenkins, let’s go up.

Grun knows what has happened, but doesn’t speak.

They reach the door and find it clear.

Inspector:

I can’t understand it. The mark has gone!

Grun:

Another mystery, Inspector.

Inspector:

Well, we have the photos from the team so they will still be there.

Grun: (already knows that the photos have been erased also)

You won’t need me now, Inspector.

Inspector:

I feel like a holiday. OK Mr. Magnusson, you can go. We will probably be back later.

Grun:

I’ll look forward to it.

As Grun is walking back to his house he sees Inspector MacNee talking with his Colleague. Grun knows that they are going to get a search warrant.

At home Grun goes to his bedroom and starts to meditate in front of the mirror. After some time Grun’s father appears and Grun then begins to understand through mind power, what his father is saying. Grun then presses his thumb onto the mirror. His father also presses his thumb onto the inside of the mirror at the same spot. His father then disappears; Grun then walks to the box and takes out a relic. It is a small coin shaped golden object with an intricate symbol on one side, and a dragons head on the other. Grun presses his thumb onto the dragons head and he disappears, a few seconds later he presses his thumb onto the other side and reappears. Grun sits down to contemplate the enormity of what he is to do, when there is a very loud banging at the door. Grun feels this meeting will be somewhat traumatic for the visitor. He knows it is Anna’s father at the door and wishes he would just go away, but knows this meeting has to take place and will end badly. Grun opens the door.

Mr. Godfrey:

Keep away from my daughter. I know what you are trying to do. I know what you are, and your father before you.

Grun;

What are we?

Mr. Godfrey:

Don’t try to be funny, you jumped up little nobody.

Grun:

I simply asked what you know about us.

Mr. Godfrey:

You are into witchcraft and devil worship. Nobody else will say it, so I will. My daughter has been influenced by you, so I am here to tell you that if you even speak to her, I will wring your neck.

Grun:

That’s a little over the top, Mr. Godfrey.

Mr. Godfrey: (takes a step nearer to Grun)

Just keep away from her you little piece of shit, and there will be no trouble. I am known around here as a hard man but a fair man and I am telling you … (Mr. Godfrey starts to have breathing problems)

Grun: (grabs him and moves him back away from the house and over the invisible line that Grun’s father had put there years before.)

Mr. Godfrey (starts to recover)

Grun:

Take it easy, Mr. Godfrey, you need to rest.

Mr. Godfrey:

What am I doing here?

Grun:

You knocked at my door and asked for help, I know where you live, I will drive you back home.

Mr. Godfrey:

I can’t remember where I live.

Grun: (knows that he has had a bad seizure and will not fully recover.)

Scene seven: Anna’s house & shop

Grun: (telephones Anna and tells her the situation)

Anna: (waiting at the door)

Dad, what happened?

Grun:

He came to my house and became angry, and then he had a seizure.

Anna:

I knew this would happen. I dreaded him finding out about us.

Grun:

We better take him to the hospital or get an ambulance.

Mr. Godfrey:

I am OK, don’t worry, this young man helped me. Are you my daughter?

Anna:

My God, he doesn’t know me!

Grun;

He is OK physically, but his mind is affected.

Anna:

You did this! I can tell.

Grun:

I am sick of people telling me what I did; please believe me; I didn’t do anything to your father, he came to my house to tell me to stay away from you.

Anna:

And I will, I don’t know why I ever wanted to help you. You must have put a curse on me and my father. Go away and don’t ever come back.

Grun:

You will feel different later.

Anna: (slams the door after Grun walks out)

Grun: (feels in his pocket and touches the coin relic. He decides to walk into town which is a short distance away and do it in invisibility mode. He doesn’t know exactly what he is going to do but feels there is a certain something which he has to do. He reaches the local food store and looks inside. He sees a boy who is known to be a local tear-away eyeing up the liquor shelf. The boy is about thirteen years old and big for his age. There is also a small gang of his friends hanging about in the street some yards away. Grun knows what is about to happen he realizes that in invisibility mode he has the gift of prophesy even more than he did before. The gang is waiting for the sign from the boy inside to ransack the store.)

Grun: (walks up to the door which automatically opens. He walks inside and looks at the boy who is looking at the door and wondering why it opened. Grun walks up to the boy and whispers to him to go away, he then pushes him in the chest with his finger. The boy moves back. Grun moves forward and does the same again. The boy starts to panic and reaches out to protect himself. He feels Grun’s hand which grabs him by the wrist. Grun whispers again but in a louder way, go away. The boy rushes out of the store in terror. He doesn’t even stop to tell his friends what happened. The gang hangs around for a few minutes then they begin to move away. Grun conceals himself behind the shelf and presses the other side of the coin to reappear.)

Grun ( picks up some sweets and goes to the counter)

Fairly quiet tonight, eh?

Shop assistant:

Yes, it is a boring job sometimes.

Grun:

(Pays for the sweets, leaves the store and heads home)

Scene Eight: the Bridge

Grun starts to have all kinds of mental images coming into his mind and also voices telling him to go somewhere or do things. He knows he has to take greater control over these things otherwise he will become deranged. After several minutes meditation he decides to follow his instinct and just stay calm and walk. He comes to a bridge over the river. He notices a young woman who is about to kill herself by jumping off the parapet. Grun decides to become invisible and walk quickly over to her to bring her down. He knows he can do this and is confident in his abilities.

Grun climbs up onto the parapet without making a noise. The girl is about to throw herself off when Grun starts to speak. (Grun knows her name to be Christine.)

Grun:

What are you doing, Christine?

Christine:

What the hell? Who is that?

Grun:

I am your inner self, and I am telling you to get down from here, and start to live properly.

Christine:

I can’t, I am too desperate.

Grun:

You don’t know the meaning of desperation. You just lost your dog. He is OK and will wait for you however long it will take, but if you kill yourself, you will not be allowed to see him for a very long time.

Christine (sits down and begins to cry)

Grun:

Get yourself down from here and go home. Your mother is waiting for you, go with her tomorrow to Martins pet shop and choose the last pup from the King Charles Spaniels litter. Is that understood?

Christine:

Yes. My God, I’m so sorry.

Grun:

You are young. Don’t be so sensitive. If you love animals so much get in touch with the RSPCA, they want a helper in Leadsham; it is only a short distance away, phone them tomorrow. now, get down.

Christine gets down and starts to run home, Grun feels happy and strangely satisfied.
