SOAR

SOAR (Student Opportunities for After-school Resources) is an organization that pairs a UIUC student with a student from the International Prep Academy(IPA). It consists of Latinx students between the ages 6-11. The volunteers range from many different majors and backgrounds. Each volunteer is paired with a single student, meeting at least once a week. The program was designed so that each student has individual time to read, in either English or Spanish. This program was designed to help students of immigrant families who seek extra support for their children. I think it is a step in ending the educational gap that exist between Latino students, and if anything it can be a small advantage or encouragement for them to go to college. A lot immigrants center their reasoning for migrating around the fact that they want a better live for their children and to give them better opportunities than the ones they had in their home countries. Programs like this facilitate the move for many families.
