Chapter 84:

Local time – 2:30pm, Wednesday 7th September, 2011.

Connecticut, USA.

Douglas opened the door for Alex, and followed her into the corridor. He was taking her to his lecture theatre, for her guest appearance at the Yale School of Economics.

‘So what did you think of my book?’ Alex asked.

‘It made me feel a bit better about my naivety. I wanted to save the President. You at least were trying to save the whole world.’

‘Yes. I really am that easy to con.’

Alex was used to speaking to people about what had been the worst period of her life. She had titled her book Gullible. Gerome had helped her put it together in only eight weeks, and now her schedule was booked out for three months, promoting it. She had already presented the lecture she was giving that day at many universities in London, and had been invited by Douglas to speak to students at Yale before she went on the media circuit in the US.

When they reached the door to his lecture theatre, Douglas paused.

‘I’ll let you in on a secret if you promise not to tell anyone.’ Douglas whispered and then winked at her. She nodded.

‘The President wasn’t really shot. It was faked, with technology and fake blood. The Bilderbergers, well I guess, they planned it that way… ’ Alex laughed.

‘What makes you think I hadn’t already worked that out?’

‘Well, it’s not in your book.’

‘I’ve had enough of exposing conspiracies for the time being. I think I caused enough trouble already. I had to let you guys keep some things under wraps if I was ever going to atone my sins.’

‘Fair enough. Not so secret then. I noticed you dedicated the book to your colleague Bernie. How is his wife by the way?’

‘She’s OK. They gave her a medal, did you hear? For Bernie’s bravery. He was the real hero who saved the day, I just got in the way and almost stuffed everything.’

‘Yes Bernie did sound like an incredible operative.’ Alex was about to enter the lecture theatre, when she paused.

‘I did have one question for you. Maxwell and Feck, what’s going on there? They haven’t been heard from in weeks but the media haven’t said anything, well… ’

‘Don’t worry about that my dear. They are being dealt with, in private.’ Douglas smiled and opened the door. Over 600 pairs of eyes turned to watch Alex walk in.

‘Good luck,’ Douglas said as he walked down the stairs ahead of her and took his position at the lectern.

‘Today we have a very special guest, Alex North, journalist and author of Gullible who is here to speak to you about her experiences during the Bilderberg conference in June. You no doubt all know the outline of the plot she was caught up in, and you will soon have a chance to read about it in detail. But that is not what Alex is here to talk to you about today, although I’m sure she will answer some questions at the end. I’ll leave it up to Alex to introduce herself.’

Douglas sat down in the front row, and Alex took his place in front of the students.

‘Gullible. That’s how I describe myself. I’m sure you’ve all tried to imagine how you may have acted, if you were in my shoes on June 16th this year. Would you have believed the Bilderberg members were running the biggest conspiracy the world had ever seen? Would you have blindly helped a group of what you thought were ex-spies in a mission to stop a nuclear attack on American soil? If they told you your own government, the United States of America, was behind the September 11 attacks, would you have used this as proof the government was corrupt and could never be trusted again? Would you protest against a world government? As you know, I am the first to admit, I was sucked into a conspiracy by a group with vested interests of which I had no idea. But the truth is the Bilderbergers were conspirators too, they were plotting the biggest conspiracy the world had ever seen. As we have all learnt, almost every government on earth was involved in this conspiracy. What I am here today to talk to you about is whether there could be a time when conspiracy is the only way to act for the good of human kind. Of course, one of my heroes, Julian Assange, would never forgive me for saying this. But, what if the only way to achieve change and progress is to act in private? What if conspiracy doesn’t always mean corruption? In Assange’s Wikileaks manifesto, he defines conspiracy, as making secret plans jointly to commit a harmful act or working together to bring about a particular result, typically to someone’s detriment. But what if Assange is wrong, and conspiracy isn’t always causing harm?

‘We all saw how Edmund Maxwell and Edward Feck responded to the plans of cooperation, when Maxwell found out about them at a Bilderberg conference. These men don’t speak for all of America, but they are rich enough, and have enough influence on some sectors of the community because of this, that they do wield massive power. These men were greedy and self seeking; they were willing to commit mass murder to stop Santos’ plans. They were so threatened they almost managed to destroy peace on earth. They murdered my colleague, Bernie. They manufactured a terrorist threat to scare the world into inaction. If Maxwell and Feck had their way, every citizen in the United States would have been made aware of the plans of their government, and would have overthrown Santos before progress even started. They could have distorted the community’s attitudes, before the community had a chance to truly understand what the outcomes were going to be.

‘Santos, and other world leaders, chose to work together to solve their nations problems. These world leaders were spurred on by an idea that came out of a Bilderberg conference. It is simple, the Bilderbergers said. We need to work together. And the Bilderbergers, already very used to secrecy, managed to convince our world leaders that there was no way to carry out these plans with community consultation. Why? Because communities are full of people who do not agree with change. The powerful voices of the likes of Maxwell and Feck can so easily paralyse action. So, if the only way to solve a problem is to get on with it and solve it, maybe a conspiracy is the quickest way to get this done. So can conspiracy be justified?’

Alex looked up from her notes and took a sip of the glass of water on a small table next to her. In the slight pause, she saw twenty hands shoot into the air, desperately wanting to ask a question. She smiled, and promised she would try to get to everyone at the end of her speech. She knew how much people liked to have their say. But if she took questions before she was finished, she would never get to the end.
