Chapter 14 The Assassin

Misara hastily went over to where Master Ladris lay. Revik quickly stood up in alarm.

“I fe-, I feel, co- cold,” Master Ladris said.

His words were broken and barely audible.

“Do not try to speak,” Misara said to him softly as she placed her hands upon him. She closed her eyes and began the Healing Prayer.

“Beret, quickly!” Kort said. “The killer is still out there.”

The bounty hunter and the knight went to their horses and took their weapons.

“The assassin must have climbed the tree and shot his dart from there”, Kort said to Beret.

They split up and went around the massive trunk of the oak tree. But the darkness prevented them from seeing very far. All of a sudden, light surrounded them.

They looked in every direction until they saw the source of this mysterious light. Revik was standing outside the house. His right arm was raised and light was emanating from his hand. Revik had cast a spell. They could now see farther into the darkness as they began circling the area.

Meanwhile, as Misara prayed, Master Ladris’ body grew colder. His face was becoming paler and his breathing was labored.

“No no no,” Misara muttered in apparent desperation. “I can’t fail!”

“Ma- manuscript … Ke- Kestalon…” Master Ladris was able to say before his gaze finally  became blank and his breathing stopped.

Some time had passed before the others reentered the house. They had been unsuccessful in finding the assassin. Master Ladris still lay on the floor. Misara was seated beside his motionless body. Tears were flowing down her face.
