Chapter 48 Death

Beret watched intently as Misara began the prayer to banish the spirit that had inhabited the Stone of Affliction for centuries. He was grateful to Revik for having helped him acquire the Holy Sword that he now wielded. He did not expect how powerful it was. The oak door that lay in ruins behind them was a testament to its power.

He wanted to use the sword to shatter the Stone but Misara had told him that physically destroying it would not eliminate its power.

And so he watched patiently as the Servant of Misar prayed to her god for the power to cast the spirit out.

The sound of something slicing through the air caught Beret by surprise. He suddenly felt pain coming from his stomach. He then looked and saw that a dagger had hit him and was now deeply embedded into his stomach. Blood started to gush out of him. Beret began to feel lightheaded. He looked around to see where it had come from. Misara seemed oblivious to what had just happened. Beret then saw the assassin emerge from the shadows. A short sword was in his hand as he approached. Beret drew his own sword but was now too weak to wield it properly. He swung it at the assassin but missed his mark.

Beret now felt helpless as the assassin approached him. He began to fear for Misara’s life. With his remaining strength he tried to raise the sword to fend off the assassin’s impending assault.

Suddenly from behind the assassin another figure appeared. The assassin whirled around but was too late to evade the sword that dug deep into his neck. Beret recognized the other figure now. It was Kort. The assassin’s lifeless body fell to the floor. He smiled as he realized that Misara was now safe from the assassin. But he noticed that Misara had stopped her prayer. He was able to pull the dagger out. As he did so, his eyesight began to dim. He then collapsed onto the cold floor of the chamber.

Misara was now sitting beside him. He struggled to remain conscious.

“Please finish the prayer,” Beret said. “The eclipse is almost upon us.”

“No no no no no,” Misara kept saying as tears flowed from her eyes.

“I have always loved you Misara,” Beret said to her. “Please don’t allow Qorath’s return. Everything will be alright.” Beret smiled at Misara before his eyes finally closed.
