33. Help Promote Permaculture To Save The Rainforest

With so much of the rainforest being destroyed everyday, the problem of the disappearing rainforest can often seem too overwhelming. More and more, however, small projects using permaculture , have proven that area of rain-forest that has already been destroyed, can be re-used to grow food, fibres and medicines. This is perfect for the local people who still need to earn a living and means the rest of the rainforest can be left to thrive.

Crees (conservation research and environmental education towards sustain-ability) is one of these projects. The project is made up of people who work to educate local people about the importance of the rainforest and how using permaculture on land that has already been destroyed, can ensure no more of the rainforest has to be cut down for new land to be cleared. There are many ways you can help them from giving a donation, spreading the word, fundraising or volunteering with them. Check out www.crees-manu.org for more information.

It’s also worth checking out Rainforest Alliance. This charity also works with farmers to ensure farming in rainforests is carried out sustainably as well as educating people about the value of rainforests and certifying products that have been produced sustainably so we can buy responsibly. They rigorously check their work for effectiveness and have been highly rated by Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy.
