Caleb Frank Gates’s biography A Christian Business Man (Boston and Chicago: Congregational Sunday School and Publishing Society, 1892) provided an invaluable account of the life and work of his father, founder Caleb F. Gates.

The published annual reports of the Chicago City Missionary Society and its successor institutions, to be found in the archives of the Chicago Theological Seminary, served as the principal source from 1883 to 1949. Important for the later period was the unpublished two· volume study of the Society and its activities undertaken by Niel E. Hansen, general director of the Society from 1936 to 1960. Other primary sources included the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Daily News, and Time magazine.
