Chapter 3

Educational Health-Book knowledge or No knowledge

What is Educational Health?

Educational health is based on some of the following factors:

Critical thinking

Problem solving

Creativity

Education and learning goals

Ability to adapt to change

Ability to access resources

Mental status and abilities or challenges Are you able to think about issues critically and analytically?

Do you have a creative outlet in your life? Do you know what resources are available to you as a lifelong learner?

These are some essential components to your overall intellectual wellness. Once again, intellectual wellness is a vital part of your overall health and well-being.

If you want to be creative take an art class or learn a new skill. If you want to become a critical thinker, start to research both sides of an argument. Further your education, by getting a degree in an area of interest to you. Education is critical to your success in life.

Everyone may not be suited for college but we are all candidates for continuous learning. You can take online classes, read or engage in intelligent conversation where you can seek knowledge from others.

Get a mentor/coach who may be a field of study that interest you and glean everything you can from them to better yourself.

Sometimes people think that if you don’t have a college education you are not intelligent. That could not be further from the truth.

Many millionaires never went to high school let alone college. It is my belief that millionaires are born not made, there is an innate business sense that some people are just gifted with. Whether or not you have a formal education, does not make you a success or a failure. Some people are self- taught and are just as successful as the college educated. No matter what method of educating yourself you choose, just remember to be the best you can be and do everything in the spirit of excellence.

Today more and more older people are deciding to go back to school, which I think is great, Just because you get older does not mean that you stop wanting to live and learn. We all no matter the age have goals, dreams and aspirations for a better life. So just make the decision and go for it.

My Story: I personally pursued higher education, because for me I needed and wanted more out of life. I pursued my B.A.

Communication and Theater with a minor in African American studies because, being a Performer was always my lifelong dream. I then decided a few years later to pursue my M.A. Counseling, Human Services and Educational Leadership with a Certification in Substance Awareness Coordination, because of my love for helping people resolve their problems by listening and then offering the necessary feedback to help them make the necessary changes in their life for the better. In June 2009 I received my B.A. in Ministry from 25

Grace Hill Bible College. I plan on pursuing my Doctorate degree in the near future.

Just because, I decided to pursue Higher Education, does not mean I believe that everyone is destined to go to college. However, I do believe that we are to be lifelong learners whether the method is through traditional (i.e. college) or untraditional (mentorship, apprenticeship or reading). We all should strive to be become more knowledgeable for knowledge is power and it is the key to a better life. The more one learns the more marketable they become in business and in life. I am an avid reader, I read books from selfhelp to business, I listen to motivational CD’s and I take online courses and I view educational programming. I become empowered when I learn something new and I believe it makes me a more interesting person to talk too.
