What Is Stomach Cancer?

Cancer in the stomach starts when the glandular cells of the stomach lining turn cancerous. The most common type of stomach cancer is adenocarcinoma which grows from the cells in the lining. Other forms of stomach cancer are soft tissue sarcomas and lymphomas.

There are roughly 7,300 diagnoses of stomach cancer each year, with adenocarcinoma being the most common (it accounts for 95% of diagnoses).

Causes of stomach cancer can include: age (95% of those diagnosed are over 50), gender (more common in men), diet, smoking, weight, family history, pre-existing stomach conditions like acid reflux, previous surgery on the stomach and H. pylori infection.

Symptoms of stomach cancer include: constant heartburn, lack of appetite, quickly feeling full, trouble swallowing, frequent burping and blood in the stool.
