Algiers

We are not sure how long Carol Johnson was in Algiers. We think he arrived here in April of 1943. For him, the war was over. Soon he would ship out to return to the US. Before he left, his eye and pencil were attracted to the different and exotic sights he found here.

Ernie Pyle went from here to Italy. Later in 1943 he published Here Is Your War: Story of G.I. Joe illustrated with drawings by Carol Johnson. He went from Italy to England, to take part in the invasion of Normandy, and then to the Pacific Theater, where he was killed in 1945.

Carol Johnson returned to the US on another long sea voyage to marry Jean Morley. They were together until his death in 2003.
