Born in Montebello, CA, John grew up with
interests in art, music and science. In 8th
grade he received all of the academic awards
for his graduating class. In high school he
took accelerated classes in English and Math,
played football and ran track every year. He
learned Spanish and went to Mexico City on a
student exchange. He studied engineering in
college at UCSB and got his BSEE with high
honors in '67 and an MSEE at Cal Tech in '68.
Then he joined the service as an officer and
became a founding member and Chief of
Operations of the first joint Tactical SATCOM
System Control site. He made Captain and
left the service to continue in military SATCOM
with the Navy where he did system design and
testing at an EFH SATCOM terminal for
submarines. He went to sea on the USS
Finback and proved feasablility. Then John
managed the first study of satellite laser to
submerged subs for Commnand/Control. With
support of the Optical Division, 3 months
and $50K, they completed the study! Being short he outlined the final report in handouts and they met 1 time. He presented the concept, they split up the chapters and he gave them the deadline for their inputs to him. He then took it all in, wrote conclusions, integrated the chapters and had illustrations and quality reproduction of the results to a national audience of about 400.
A $1,000,000 contract to redo "The Dean Report" and $10,000,000 of 6.1 money into the budget to push the technology along was the result. John returned to the ADM cycle for the EHF
SATCOM, but trained himself for less stressful work and tighter budgeting in the Arts and succeeded. (1980 to present).
