Chapter 107

12th August

‘It’s less interesting than Eastenders,’ said Duck, looking at the image of Wycombe sitting and watching his own TV. ‘I never thought anything could be that boring.’

‘Surveillance is tedious,’ Jenny replied. ‘It’s possible to go for weeks or months without getting anything useful.’

‘We’ll have to make our own entertainment then,’ said Duck, putting his arm around Jenny.

She turned her head and kissed him. ‘Sounds like a good idea,’ she replied.

They were interrupted by the ring of Wycombe’s mobile.

‘Hello,’ said Wycombe, answering it. He listened to the person at the other end for some time. ‘When?’ he finally asked. He listened further. ‘You’d better come here so we can plan this together. If Brightman wants us to take out the Northchester base in a month, then there’s work to do. … Is Tuesday at eight-thirty in the evening OK? … Good, I’ll see you then.’

‘That may be the lead we want,’ said Jenny, getting up and walking to her laptop.

‘We’ll find out on Tuesday,’ Duck replied.

‘We may have discovered something more already,’ said Jenny, typing on the keyboard. ‘I thought so,’ she said after a few moments.

‘What have you found?’ asked Duck.

‘Joan drew up a shortlist of MI5 and MI6 operatives that might be the WAR mole. One of those names was David Brightman.’
