Helen rapidly put on a dressing gown and quickly descended the stairs.

Someone knocking on the door at seven o’clock in the morning usually meant that the postman had a delivery. She was surprised, therefore, to find Mandy Watkins on her doorstep.

‘What is it?’ asked Helen.

‘I’m sorry to call so early,’ Mandy replied, ‘and I know this is going to sound very odd. I’ve got a car here,’ she pointed to a white Range Rover parked outside with a driver at the wheel. ‘I’d like you and Swan to come with me.’

‘Why?’

‘Neither of you have done anything wrong, but I can’t explain what this is about right now. Can you just trust me?’
