“I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about, Mr Holms,” the landlady replied, but there was a tremor in her voice.
“Mrs Houston, it is all too plain. You have smelt of Cynthia La Crème's perfume for the past few days and until today you have kept your distance from her. How did that perfume come to be on you?”
“I'll put your rent up,” she threatened.
But Holms was in full flow and would not be denied his ultimate triumph. “Come, come, Mrs Houston, the game is over. Bring up the boy that was taken from you at an early age to become the footballing captain of his country. Bring us Jimmy Henderson, your son!”
