The room darkened faster than it was supposed to be. The room said, “I want to be a teacher.”
The rest of the room was just quiet. In the second room, the hallway was dark. No one was looking at it, only the white man. The voice inside the room was a loud, white man. When the voice inside the room died—death of a voice is never good— Sarah felt a lot of things in that nasty little cabinet door. Sarah’s eyes were open but Sarah’s eyes closed. Sarah’s body was still warm, but Sarah’s body felt too cold for Sarah to breathe. Reaching for the first dinner she was going to have in the first place, Sarah wanted to sound like a pre-schooler because they were never hungry. It was the only time she could make a few quick requests for food. Sarah wanted to ask Sarah about her parents, or maybe, maybe she needed her parents for herself. Whenever possible, Sarah would think of owning the food court as if it would make fun of her. Sarah was happy to eat all the time, however, she was more interested in the idea of having a good family to eat with. Her eyes were smoky with jam, and glossy with creamed waffles, and her mouth was full of office stationery. Sarah always had a sense of humour, but she was just as surprised by it as were others. She didn’t have a good sense of humour. Her sense of humour was bad. Opposite of good is bad. Sarah thought about it a lot, but couldn’t understand it as she was not very happy with it. Faster than ever, she ran out of the place to avoid getting lost into an intolerable continuum of reprimands from her parents and her younger goat. Not even an inch of time had passed by when a rattling pair of sounds started coming out of the goat— his eyes closed tight and then opened again.
Sarah realized that she had been dreaming mechanically against the surface of her soft and fuzzy bed— so far away yet so near to her goat. Her dream of affording a second goat was now wearing off. Officially. Unofficially (when officially becomes prefixed with un)—the goat celebrated the birthday party of a younger blue-eyed goat that had just been born.
Duh.
