Chapter 31

DS Mike Patterson stuck his head around the door frame. “Sorry to interrupt, Boss, just picked up a call for you in passing. Your phone was engaged, apparently.  Some girl at the FIU. I’ve forgotten her name. Can I stick it through to you, now?”

Thurstan nodded and smiled. “This’ll be the info we wanted on Brannan, Derek. I’ll stick it on speaker.” The phone rang. “DCI Baddeley,” he answered.

“Hello, sexy! I’m back!” It was Lizzie. “I missed you so much!”

Thurstan blushed, picked up the handset and jabbed the speaker off. Degsy covered his mouth to hide a wide smile.

“Erm, Lizzie. I didn’t know it was you. We were on speaker phone.” He shot Degsy an embarrassed glance.

Lizzie laughed. “Oh my God. I’ve not just broadcast that to the entire office, have I?”

“No, just Derek.”

“Oh, that’s ok. He knows anyway. I just wanted to tell you that I’ve taken over the enquiries you wanted. Let’s just say, your Mister Brannan was living way beyond his means. Now, Mickey Fenton, they’ve done some stuff on him in the past. I’ll have it updated though and get them both to you as soon as I can.”

Degsy stood up and mouthed, “I’ll come back in ten minutes,” flashing the digits on his hand twice; a big grin on his face. Thurstan waved acknowledgement and waited for him to leave. “Any plans for tonight? I’ve not much on so I could, I suppose, fit you in between the cricket and European mud wrestling, if you’d like?”

She laughed again. “Sounds exciting. My place or yours?”
