A Dubious Doubting Thomas
Chapter 38
Chi smelled a rat, as Dick Avery might say. Why Americans had a penchant for smelling filthy rodents was beyond his comprehension. A phrase about a smelly rat made no sense to him, although “ratting someone out” did. That he understood from watching all the old, American cop shows on the tube.
He didn’t trust Albert Wu in the least. He thought Khun Richard placed too much faith in him and the importance of his role. He and Angie discussed his concern at some length. She didn’t share his distrust of Wu, although she acknowledged he could damage the operation if he was still loyal to Amar. They agreed he needed to be closely watched to see if he had a change of heart or head about working for them.
Angie was going to disobey her boss’s order to keep close tabs on Wu by assigning another of her street people to watch him. She was known to him and that was fine for her protective role, but not so good for an undercover spy.
“My antennae start to twitch whenever I’m around the guy and I don’t know why. Perhaps it’s the old cop’s instincts or paranoia coming into play, but there’s a visceral, gut reaction I experience nonetheless,” Chi mentioned.
“Albert’s dirty, one way or another. Maybe the fact he’s a sleazy drug trafficker sparks my cop bias towards him and blurs my vision, but I don’t see him as trustworthy.”
“Okay Khun Chanchi, let’s see if he makes a false move. If he does, we’ll drop the hammer down on him for fucking with us,” Angie asserted in a very unladylike or ungentlemanly manner.
Sometimes those who also served and protected needed their mouths washed out with a bar of strong, lye soap.
