“Hi, it’s Gandalph, isn’t it?” Chuck smiled down at him.

He looked up. “Yes, Boss.”

“DI Morris from DCI White’s syndicate. I’ve got a bit of a problem. Our computer whizz has gone off sick for a few days and I’d like you to take a look at something we need doing.”

Gandalph shook the extended hand. “I’ll have to square it with the Boss.”

“Oh, it’s ok, I’ve already mentioned it to Degsy.” He smiled again.

“No, I meant the DCI.”

“Oh. Sorry, I hadn’t realised you were working on something special. I’ll go and speak to him then.” Someone handed him a mug of tea. “Loads of milk?” They nodded. He looked back at Gandalph. “I’ll just have this first.” He sat down on a spare seat. “What’s your real name?”

Gandalph kept tapping the keyboards. “Everybody calls me Steve or Gandalph, apart from the Boss.”

Chuck smiled. “I heard you were in SB?”

“Yep. Eighteen months.”

“Why only eighteen months? Didn’t like it?”

Gandalph smiled wistfully. “Oh, I liked it but I didn’t love it. Besides, I got caught out shagging the DI’s missus.”

Chuck laughed. “If you’re asking if I’m married, I’m not.” He took a mouthful of tea. “It wasn’t Dopey Dan’s missus, was it?”

Gandalph stopped typing and sat back. “It was actually.” He recognised the expression on the DI’s face. “Not you as well?”

Chuck inclined his head. “I never got caught though.”

They looked at one another and said in unison: “Horny as hell and a good looker!” then began to laugh.
