Section 11: Twitter Tactics

In the last section we talked about how to dominate Facebook, now we are going to go over how to improve your Twitter account to do the same thing. Twitter is another social media phenomenon that cannot be overlooked. The idea here is that you can enter short blurbs and a link. I use Twitter primarily for marketing and not relationship building. However, it is still important to add valuable content!

Step #1: Get Followers

The only people who can see your “Tweets” are people who are “Following” you, so you need to get as many targeted followers as possible. Here is a FREE strategy that I use to get Twitter Followers: Sign up for a free Twellow account. Twellow allows you to specify the industry or interests of the people you want to target (i.e. network marketing, mlm, etc.).

It will bring up all users, in order of the number of followers that they have, and you can click to follow these people – you will see their bio and can decide if they are someone you wish to follow). Twitter is different from other social networking sites in that you cannot request that someone make a mutual connection with you.

The best way for you to get people to follow your tweets is to follow theirs; when they see that you have followed them they could potentially return the gesture. Twitter does limit you to the number of new users you can follow per day; I do

not know what that number is, but Twellow will let you know when you have reached your max.

Step #2: Follow Up With Your Followers

Sign up for a free Social Oomph Account. At Social Oomph, you can set up a direct message that will automatically be sent to everyone who follows you. You will have to take the free trial to use this feature, and later down the road, if you decide its worth paying for you can do so. As far as message content goes, I recommend to not make this message too long or spammy.
I thank them for following me, let them know that I look forward to getting to know them better, and provide a link back to my Facebook page asking that they connect with me on FB as well. This strategy helps to build my FB “friends” list at the same time! You can also provide a link back to your blog so they can learn more about you. Your call. DO NOT provide a link back to a capture page or replicated website!

Step #3: Manage Your Following List

Use free Twitter Karma to unfollow people who do not follow you. I am finding that it is important to keep your ratio of followers and followees pretty close, so every few days I will go to Twitter Karma and unfollow those people who are not following me. It does not speak well of your online presence if you are following five hundred people and only have five people following you.

You do not want to appear “spammy” or out for yourself. Remember, this is still a community which means there needs to be a balanced amount of give and take.

Unfortunately, Twitter no longer allows bulk unfollows so this process can take a little while and is tedious. But it is important though so you can follow the max number of new users on a daily basis, so take the time to do the work!

Step #4: Managing Your Account

Managing all of these accounts can be time consuming and exhausting. I recommend downloading TweetDeck. TweetDeck, if you are not familiar, is a really cool tool that allows you to manage your Twitter direct messages, interact, and post to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts all at the same time. It is completely free and will hopefully help to save you some time jumping back and forth between pages and social networking sites.

And finally, be consistent with your Tweeting. People follow those who not only share the same interests but who also tweet interesting things more than once in a blue moon.

Furthermore, if you don’t tweet regularly your tweets will easily get lost in the masses. You need to be consistent because of the high volume of users and Tweets flooding everyone’s pages; there is so much content constantly streaming through people’s accounts that you can’t count on your followers reading every single post.
A quick and easy method to make your posts more noticeable is by using HashTags for the keyword you want people to notice. For example, if my keyword is Marketing my post might look like this: Check out this Great New #Marketing Technique! People will search for that keyword specifically to find like-minded people to follow.

There are plenty of tools out there to “automate” your Tweets so that you don’t have to constantly be on Twitter. I recommend using one (right now I am using Twaitter.Com) because Twitter is more of a volume over content site in my opinion.

And that is all for your Twitter Tutorial!
