A
NTIQUES? Some woman did not deem them
so!
They were modern to her long ago, and
new.
That whatnot, chair, and table in this show,
Clearly depict what time alone can do.
That far-off day she set them in their place
They shone with newness: walnut, glass, and
plush,
Her china figurines were things of grace,
Her velvet carpets, flower-sprigged and lush.
Now in this dusty shop they wait apart,
Battered, yet repaired ingeniously,
Set to delight some antique seeker’s heart.
She would weep today, I know, if she could see
Her once new treasures ready to be sold,
Holding the mute appeal of things grown old.
