On the Road to Jericho
I
HAVE not been to Jericho,
But I can see the road
Which Jesus took that evening
When he lifted the great load
Of blindness from Bartimeus,
Who, startled by a cry,
Heard with joy that “Jesus
Of Nazareth passeth by.”
And nothing could restrain him—
He cried out eagerly:
“Jesus thou son of David,
Have mercy upon me.”
Then the Master with compassion
Opened those sightless eyes!
Oh, I can see the rapture,
The exquisite surprise
On the face of him once blinded
As he received his sight,
And saw the lovely countryside
Bathed in the evening light.
Quite often in my fancy
I leave my tasks and go
