Now and Then

Once there was open prairie

and they worked it all

with only a one-horse plow

but today it is harder

to succeed than it has ever been

Once there was a forest

and they cleared it all

entirely by hand

but we are far busier now

then they were then

Once they built a city

entirely from a dream

and the people flocked to fill it

but we are far more sophisticated

then they ever were

Once they were called to feed their children

into the meat grinder of war

just so that they could be free

but the smallest demands on us now

fill us with horror

Once their blood fell like fertilizer

forcing the soil to begin producing

but today it seems we just don’t have the time

to keep civilization going
