The Power of Walking Away

Hello darling

he said, approaching…

but she wanted more than a gaze meeting

across an overcrowded room

if a glance can wander once

it can do it again before the day crashes

I’ve never had somebody give me this feeling

he was whispering, yes, his whiskey-soaked breath

was very promising…

but she wanted someone who would stay

through the struggle of the winter

not another wolf

who would eat whatever he was given

and run off to devour another

and he began reminding

her of the easy prey that she had been

and then she was turning

and walking away

and he was left in the alley, drunkenly staring

at the figure moving from dark into day

she was moving on

no longer content with a vampire

who only wanted to suck at her life

instead, she would hold out for someone

who wanted to share the struggle of living

someone who did more than spend the day thinking of number one

she was dreaming of someone willing to think of two

just give in

was what they had all said

but she had realized

her value

that she was strong enough

that she didn’t have to…
