When everything we’ve done

seems to overwhelm

the world we’ve always known

and we long for someone

to lift the burden

something true, something certain

to tame the beast we hide behind the curtain

our lives of restless pacing

searching and never finding

hope through our works and working

Grace is the name of a girl

and the gift of God

we get when we aren’t deserving

the lesson of Jesus

when we are crumbling

under our the weight of the burden

we insist on bearing

the stench of a past we hate

the memories that remain, pulling

us down to our knees

a stronger hand makes for easier lifting

we don’t have to carry on alone

if we admit it is grace we’re needing

a river of truth to wash us clean

to wash away the ruins we’ve been leaving
