Yi Kyubo lived during a very turbulent period of history. Koryo was threatened to the north by barbarian tribes and from within by factionalism in the bureaucracy. Yi Kyubo entered the civil service late but had a long and distinguished career. In the opinion of many commentators, he is Korea’s greatest poet.
