Kwon Homun passed the civil service examination when he was thirty. Shortly afterwards, his parents died, whereupon he resigned his position and spent the next six years mourning. He built a study beneath Ch’ongsong Mountain and devoted himself to literary pursuits. As his reputation grew, more and more scholars and literary men frequented his house. His shijo sing the simple joys of country life.
