DINNER PARTY

Everything planned to the last detail,
The entrée, the boeuf, the mousse, so delectable, Timed to the minute, timed to the instant The guests are supposed to arrive.
Planning so fatal, planning inflexible,
Planning that doesn’t allow
For traffic to hold up the guests.
They have to arrive right NOW!
Damnation! The dinner is done,
The vegetables spoiled, the meat cooked dry, Mousse gone flat and hard.
Why do I even try?

But the guests are here with a bottle of wine,
And packets of snacks and nuts.
Hunger makes of these morsels a tasty meal,
And the gaiety of the company is more fun
Than sit-down fare,
So instead of a failure I start to feel

A success, and neglect to care.
