NIGHT SURF

Night surf lulls me off to sleep
With steady rhythmic roar.
I lie relaxed and listen
To waves breaking on the shore.
In my sleep the surf rolls on,
Endless, thundering in.
I leave my window open
So in my dreams I hear the din,
The roll of drums, the blast of wind,
The orchestra of ocean,
The tuba, bass, the grand piano,
Performing in slow motion,
Majestic music of the surf,
Huge, untamed and free,
With its ever-changing sameness,

The never-changing sea.
