AFTER RAIN

The air is effervescent, crisp and clean,
And earth is washed. The grass is green again. It is the morning after blessed rain,
And sun comes up to kiss with gold the scene. Magpies warble; kookaburras laugh;
A willy wagtail twitters in the gums.
There is the freshness and the green that comes These times, rain’s sparkling aftermath.
Raindrops drip from glistening leaves on trees. Spring water burbles by the path that winds Among the gums downhill till it finds
The creek that once more flows towards the seas. Raindrops, the mercies that from heaven fall

On just and unjust, spread hope over all.
