For Evelina and David Rooney
There it is, Gamla Uppsala Church.
They sacrificed people here long ago.
Sometimes bulls. It seems a fine place
for a wedding.
Evelina? We’ve never met.
Edda says she’s quiet, thoughtful,
they’re perfect for each other, they even read
the encyclopedia together.
David?
I’ve known him since he was three.
He walked into my bathroom
and introduced himself,
just like that, like it was time
we got to know each other.
Those eyes.
These young marriages:
the wedding nights must be so wild.
Desire?
Of course, desire, it’s always there.
But something else, a kind of awe.
Think of it: all those years
trying to somehow find your way,
and then one day,
you look into a stranger’s eyes
and see there’s someone nice inside.
Someone with the brightest eyes.
