For Lizi and Ricardo, July 8, 2005
Sometimes in my dreams, Lizi,
the two of us are in a Garden
filled with winding paths
that go nowhere.
I keep reminding you
Ricardo is waiting at the altar,
but you don’t seem the least concerned.
You tell me
you love the way Ricardo kisses.
You say to me: Ricardo has such wonderful lips,
they are almost as soft as mine,” and then,
“Ricardo thinks I am still a little girl,
that I can’t do anything by myself.
But you know what, Tio Justin?
I could get out of here blindfolded.
Ricardo doesn’t understand
that this is where Love tends
to the flowers of desire,
even the big smelly ones
that bloom late at night. Love
never leaves here unless
Love is invited, that’s why the paths
go nowhere: Love doesn’t need them.
You have to ask Love to join you, and then
Love will come. That is why Love is coming
to El Sancturio Nacional del Corazon de Maria:
because I have asked Love to be there,
to sit with my grandmother next to my mother
and to give a big hug to my father
