GOOD FRIENDS

When people betray

As they most inevitably do,

Don’t be shocked or surprised

By the wicked that they choose.

I’m blind if I say that I can do no wrong-

I’m lying if I say to myself

That I’d never return the favor.

These so-called friends

Deserted me at my darkest time

They lived drunkenly

While I hid in despair.

They held me up to unattainable standards

While they stooped so low

When I cried for an answer.

Don’t be surprised that I made due

With the crumbs you left me-

Don’t hang your head now in false humility.

My diatribes are going nowhere

And I suppose that’s where it ends.

So long, good friend!
